Galleries, Databases, and other Image Collections

AIDS Posters (UCLA Digital Library)
The AIDS Poster Collection consists of 625 posters from 44 countries including Australia, Austria, Canada, China (and Hong Kong), Costa Rica, France, Germany, India, Japan, Luxembourg, Martinique, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Tahiti, Uganda, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The posters were issued by a variety of institutions and organizations to educate and warn people about AIDS and to offer advice and information in visual form. Some are more blunt and graphic than others, and they come in many styles.

Anatomy of the Human Body, Henry Gray
This version of the classic 1918 Gray's Anatomy includes text plus 1,247 engravings, many in color. Searchable by keyword.

Biotech Graphics Gallery
"Graphics Gallery is a series of labeled diagrams with explanations representing the important processes of biotechnology. Each diagram is followed by a summary of information, providing a context for the process illustrated."

Diabetes Clip Art (CDC)
A collection of several images originally used for a CDC patient education publication.

Europeana links you to over 6 million digital images, videos, texts and sounds from over 50 of Europe's museums, galleries, archives and libraries, including the national libraries of most of the European countries such as the British Library, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and the Biblioteca Nacional de España. Search results can be limited by language, country, date, provider, and type.

Food and Agriculture Organization media
FAO has a collection of forestry photographs, as well as an audio and video catalog searchable by country or subject, with files on some of FAO's events and programs searchable by subject, and webcasts available to view.

Health Education Assets Library (HEAL)
HEAL is a digital library of freely available teaching materials for health sciences education. It is designed to facilitate the sharing of a wide variety of high-quality, freely available multimedia resources. The collection may be searched by description, author, title, and more.

HONmedia Medical Images
Produced by the Health on the Net Foundation, this site is a repository of thousands of images and videos pertaining to 1,700 topics and themes. It is browsable by major topic and subtopic, includes an alphabetical index, and is searchable by keyword.

Media/Materials Clearinghouse
"The Media/Materials Clearinghouse is an international resource for health professionals who seek samples of photographs, pamphlets, posters, videos, and many other media/materials designed to promote public health. The M/MC is part of the Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs, which is a Center within the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health." The database is searchable by subject, country, format, and more.

Microbial Mugshots (EPA Microbiological and Chemical Exposure Assessment Research Division)
An image gallery of microorganisms produced by staff scientists using electron microscopy and confocal microscopy for microbe visualization.

NIH Photo Galleries
The NIH provides links here to photo collections from its institutes including the National Institute of Cancer, National Human Genome Research Institute, and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, among others. Many photos in these collections are in the public domain.

National Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention Divisions of HIV/AIDS Prevention Slide Sets (CDC)
Contains several slide sets on topics such as AIDS surveillance, epidemiology, testing, and mortality.

National Eye Institute Photos, Images, and Videos
Contains numerous images on eye disease simulations, eye anatomy, professional/patient interaction, eye charts, and so forth.

National Library of Medicine Image Collections

Images from the History of Medicine
"This system provides access to the nearly 70,000 images in the prints and photograph collection of the History of Medicine Division NLM. The collection includes portraits, pictures of institutions, caricatures, genre scenes, and graphic art in a variety of media, illustrating the social and historical aspects of medicine."

Images from the History of the Public Health Service
"This exhibit is an online version of Images from the History of the Public Health Service; A Photographic Exhibit by Ramunas Kondratas, Ph.D. printed in 1994 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Public Health Service." The images are searchable via a subject index.

The Visible Human Project
This project is "the creation of complete, anatomically detailed, three-dimensional representations of the normal male and female human bodies. Acquisition of transverse CT, MR and cryosection images of representative male and female cadavers has been completed. The male was sectioned at one millimeter intervals, the female at one-third of a millimeter intervals."

PAHO Photo Gallery (Pan American Health Organization)
Includes galleries of photographs on health promotion, environment, immunization, maternal and child health, communicable diseases, and more.

Public Health Image Library (from the CDC)
An extensive collection of still images, image sets, and multimedia files related to public health. The content is organized into hierarchical categories of people, places, and science, and is presented as single images, image sets, and multimedia files.

NOTE: Access limited to UCB faculty, staff, and students.
Statista provides access to quantitative facts on media, business, politics, and other areas. Sources of information include market research reports, trade publications, scientific journals, and government sources. Data may be downloaded into spreadsheets and presentations. Statista incorporates data from over 18,000 sources. It covers health-related topics such as health systems, care and support, the state of health, medical technology, pharmaceutical products and their market, and physicians, hospitals and pharmacies.

UCSF Japanese Woodblock Print Collection
This collection of Japanese woodblock prints "provide a window into traditional Japanese attitudes toward illness, the human body, women, religion, and the West."

USDA Agricultural Research Service Image Gallery
Includes over 2,000 photographs in topics such as animals, crops, education, and field research.

WIC Image Gallery (USDA) new
"The WIC Works Resource System is an online education and training center for staff of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). It is a joint project between the National Agricultural Library/Food and Nutrition Information Center, USDA/Food and Nutrition Service, and the University of Maryland." Categories of pictures here include Breastfeeding and Breastfeeding Peer Counseling; Clinic Environment; Food Packages, Farmer's Market, and Grocery Store; Physical Activity. The pictures here are available in 93DPI, 150DPI, and 300DPI.

World Health Organization Mediacentre Multimedia Page
Includes audio, photo, and video downloads of recent WHO events, including supporting material.
