Because PubMed indexes articles about ethnic groups in all countries of the world, it may be useful to limit searches to groups in the United States. One way to do this is by using the Boolean operator AND with the name of a country or geographic region AND the health subject. For example, to retrieve articles about hypertension in African Americans in California, enter "African Americans AND California AND hypertension" in the search field.

The subheading ETHNOLOGY is added to a geographic term for place of origin of people living outside their native land. For example, for articles on immigrants from Asia, enter "Asia/ethnology" AND "United States." A health term may also be added, e.g. "Asia/ethnology AND United States AND asthma." The subheading ETHNOLOGY is also used with disease and health behavior terms including "Alcohol Drinking", "Aging", "Attitude to health", "Food Habits", "Smoking" to denote ethnic, cultural, or racial aspects.

PsycINFO 1806 to date. (Access limited to UCB faculty, staff and students)

Journal articles, conference proceedings, dissertations, and book chapters indexed by the American Psychological Association. Subject headings include: "Minority Groups", "Asians", "Blacks", "Hispanics", "Ethnic Groups". Check the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms at the Reference Desk for a complete list of subject headings, or use the Thesaurus Search feature of the database.

Ethnic NewsWatch 1990 to date. (Access limited to UCB faculty, staff and students)

The Ethnic NewsWatch database contains news, culture and history from 200 publications of the ethnic, minority and native press. Nearly 500,000 full text articles dating back to 1990 are available, along with archival material dating back to the mid 1980's. More than 7,500 new articles are added each month. Ethnic NewsWatch is searchable in both English and Spanish, with titles in both languages; more than 100,000 articles are in Spanish.

Chicano Database 1967 to present. (Access limited to UCB faculty, staff and students)

Use the Chicano Database to retrieve records for all types of materials in the areas of Mexican-American topics, and since 1992, materials on other Latino cultures--e.g., Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans, and Central American immigrants. Subject coverage includes art, language, sociology, public policy, economics, history, literature, politics, and law. The database is produced by the Chicano Studies Library, University of California.

Sociological Abstracts 1963 to date. (Access limited to UCB faculty, staff and students)

Subject headings include Minority Groups, Ethnic Groups, Ethnic Minorities, Disadvantaged, Black Americans, Black White Differences, Hispanic Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Cultural Groups, American Indians (Native Americans used 1979-85). Population subject terms may be combined with specific health terms (e.g. Health Care Utilization, Health Problems, Health Services. See Thesaurus of Sociological Indexing Terms).

Social Work Abstracts 1977 to date. (Access limited to UCB faculty, staff and students)

The Social Work Abstracts database, produced by the National Association of Social Workers, Inc., contains more than 35,000 records from social work and other related journals on topics such as homelessness, AIDS, child and family welfare, aging, substance abuse, legislation, community organization, and more.

Searching Library Catalogs

To find other books or journals, search the library catalog in either the title or keyword field, unless you know the Library of Congress Subject Heading for the subject you are researching. Subject headings frequently differ from commonly used terms. For example, to find works on Native Americans, you would have to search using the subject term "Indians of North America" - if you didn't know this subject heading, you would have better luck searching for Title words "Native Americans health" and then looking at the subject headings assigned to appropriate works to then do a subject search.
