Searching Library Catalogs

To find books or journals, search the library catalog by title words or keywords unless you know the Library of Congress Subject Heading for the subject you are researching. Subject headings may differ from commonly used terms. If you need help, please ask a reference librarian.

Publications of Occupational Health Organizations

ACGIH Publications catalog. American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) is a professional society of government personnel responsible for promoting standards in industrial health. ACGIH publishes the widely used TLV (Threshold Limit Values) lists as well as books on industrial hygiene and occupational hazard control. The Guides and Handbooks section of this Guide lists some of their most significant publications.

ATSDR publications list. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) was established within the Public Health Service in 1983 to protect both the public and workers from exposure to hazardous substances in storage sites or released in accidents. Their publication program includes comprehensive surveys of various CERCLA (Superfund) chemicals, which include surveys of human health effects and assessments of occupational exposure. To locate, search library catalogs for title "Toxicological profile [chemical name]" using title word and chemical name.

NIOSH publications catalog including NIOSH publications fiscal years 1986-1997 (1971-present publications list is available online). National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts toxicology research to identify chemicals that may pose hazards to workers. Their publications include criteria documents ("Criteria for a recommended standard: occupational exposure to . . .[chemical name]"), which usually contain a Recommended Exposure Limit (REL), as well as recommendations for work practices, medical surveillance, and control measures. Use the Publications catalog to identify reports and publications by subject or title. HD7260.N5 Reference-Miscellaneous

World Health Organization publications on occupational health. (Use the Subject search drop-down menu). Includes Environmental health criteria for various chemicals RA565.A1.E55, and IARC Monographs on carcinogenic risks to humans RC267.A1.I2.

Electronic Databases

Please see the Public Health Library's Toxicology and Occupational Health resources on the Internet.

PubMed  1953 to present. Journal articles indexed by the National Library of Medicine. In addition to searching by keyword, search using PubMed's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) by clicking on the "MeSH Database" link. Occupational health MeSH examples are "occupational diseases", "occupational health services", "occupational exposure", "dermatitits, occupational", etc.

TOXLINE via National Library of Medicine's TOXNET (1900-present) is an extensive collection of online bibliographic information covering the biochemical, pharmacological, physiological, and toxicological effects of drugs and other chemicals. Nearly all of its citations include abstracts and/or indexing terms and CAS Registry Numbers.

NIOSHTIC-2 is a searchable bibliographic database of occupational safety and health publications, documents, grant reports, and journal articles supported in whole or in part by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
