Answers

Q1: What are your hours?

Go to Public Health Library hours

Q2: Where are you located?

The Public Health Library is in 1 University Hall on the corner of Oxford Street and University Avenue.

Q3: May anyone use the library?

The library is open to the public, and our materials are available to everyone for on-site use.

Q4: Who can check out library material?

UCB faculty, staff, or students with current ID, and anyone with a current UCB library borrowing card.

Q5: Where can I get a library card if I am not a UCB Faculty, Staff, or Student?

At the Library Privileges Desk in Doe Library. If you have questions about library borrowing privileges, you may call the Library Privileges Desk at (510) 642-3403.

Q6: How can I get a book renewed?

Books may be renewed online using the GLADIS system from any library or remote terminal. If renewing online:

  1. Type "INV"
  2. At the prompt, type in the identification number on the back of your library card or student ID
  3. When prompted, key your birth month and day in MMDD format, or the four digit PIN that you supplied when you obtained your library card
  4. You will now see a list of items charged to you. You can renew them by typing "REN" followed by the item number.

You may also renew books in person or renew up to 5 items by calling our Circulation Desk at (510) 642-2511. All journals are non-renewable. Reserve, microfiche, and pamphlet file materials are also non-renewable.

Q7: Can books from other campus libraries be returned to the Public Health Library?

Patrons are encouraged to return material to the owning library. Shelving delays or problems in mail routing may sometimes cause a patron's privileges to be blocked.

Q8: What if the book I want isn't on the shelf?

First check GLADIS. This should indicate if the book is charged out, being mended, missing, or has a special shelving location elsewhere in the library such as REFERENCE or RESERVE.

If the book or journal volume that you are looking for is charged out, you may put a hold on it at the Circulation Desk if you are a UCB faculty, staff or student with current ID, or have a current library borrowing card.

If the item is not charged out and not on the shelf, start by checking the shelving carts in the Reading Room. The item may be on a cart, awaiting reshelving. Also check the photocopy area, where material often accumulates during the day. If this doesn't work, ask for assistance. Staff will assist you in trying to find the item, or can start a formal search process to locate it.

Q9: Where are your journals? What does "UNCL" mean?

For about 75 journal titles, GLADIS and Melvyl contain the note "Unbound issues on display." These journals are shelved alphabetically by title in the display area in the back of the library.

Except for these display journals and those journals designated as "UNCL," all other current unbound and bound journals are shelved together by call number in the stacks.

Journals designated as "UNCL" (unclassified, i.e. having no assigned call number due to special funding) are shelved separately in the back right-hand side of the stacks in alphabetical order by title. UNCL journals do not circulate.

Q10: Can unbound journals be checked out?

Issues of unbound journals with call numbers circulate for 2 hours only. These journals are non-renewable. Journals in the UNCL collection do not circulate.

Q11: How do I find journal articles on a particular topic?

Start with an article index in your subject area. The Reference Desk staff can help you find an appropriate index. Pubmed, an online index of journal articles produced by the National Library of Medicine, is a key article index for research for many topics in public health. Several others are listed on the Public Health Library's Online Indexes and Databases web page.

Q12: Do you have copy machines?

Go to Copy Machines

Q13:Can I get change in the Public Health Library?

No. The Public Health Library does not have change. Change machines are located at the following libraries: BioScience and Natural Resources, Main Circulation, Main Periodical Room, Law, Moffitt, and Music.

Q14: What do "Reference," "Index," "Permanent Reserve," "Reserve," "Unbound issues on display," "NRLF," and "Main Stack" mean?

The note "Reference" on a catalog record indicates the publication is shelved in the Reference Collection. The additional note or designation such as "Statistics" or "Handbooks" refers to specific shelves in the Reference area labelled "Statistics" or "Handbooks" where the volume is shelved by its call number. These volumes do not circulate.

"Index" refers to the shelves along the first aisle on the east side of the Reading Room.

Permanent Reserve items in the Public Health Library are shelved at the Circulation Desk and circulate for 2 hours, library use only. Other reserve items in the Public Health Library are shelved at the Circulation Desk and have short loan periods.

The current issues of journal titles listed in GLADIS or Melvyl containing the note "Unbound issues on display" are on display in an area near the Reference Desk, organized alphabetically by title.

"NRLF" refers to the Northern Regional Library Facility, the University's remote storage facility. Requests for NRLF material may be submitted online via Pathfinder or at our Circulation Desk by UCB faculty, staff, or students with current I.D, or patrons with current library borrowing cards.

"Main Stack" items are housed in Main Library (Doe).

Q15: What's the difference between GLADIS and Melvyl?

GLADIS is the UC Berkeley online catalog. It lists current holdings as well as provides course reserve and circulation information for most UCB libraries. The web-based version of GLADIS is called Pathfinder.

Melvyl is the University of California online catalog. It lists library holdings at all the UC campuses, the California State Library, some of UCB's specialized library collections such as the Institute of Governmental Studies Library and Water Resources Center Archives, and more.

Q16: What instruction is offered by the Public Health Library?

Go to Instruction: PubMed, EndNote, etc.
