The Public Health Library is located in the basement of University Hall on the University of California Berkeley campus. The library's services and collections support primarily the School of Public Health and its research units. See below for a description of the Public Health Library collection.
Other campus library collections which support fields related to public health include:
Reference librarians are available to assist you in your research. Reference hours during the academic semester are Monday to Friday, 10AM to noon and 2PM to 5PM. Reference service hours may vary during intersession and in the summer.
The Public Health Library Collection
The Public Health Library collection includes material in all areas of public health, including nutrition in health and disease, health administration, epidemiology, toxicology, occupational health, maternal and child health, biostatistics, communicable diseases, community health and environmental health, and international health. We currently have about 99,000 volumes and 1,200 current serial titles.
Library services and collections are open to the public. Most of the library's materials circulate for use outside the library. Materials circulate to UCB faculty, staff and students with valid ID cards. Others who wish to borrow materials, must have a current library card issued by Library Privileges, located on the first floor of the Main (Doe) Library.
The library has several public PCs that provide Internet access to the Library Web, which includes over 225 indexes and abstracts databases, as well as web access to Melvyl and Pathfinder (which includes GLADIS and more).
Most material is shelved in open stacks by call number. Recent issues of some high-use journals are on display in an area near the back of the library, arranged in alphabetical order.
A small collection of journal titles, kept separately because of special funding, are shelved alphabetically by title on the back right-hand side of the stacks. These are the Unclassed journals, which carry the shelving designation of "UNCL" instead of a call number in the catalogs.
Books circulate for one month, subject to recall. Journals (except for the UNCL titles which do not circulate) circulate for 2 hours. Journals are non-renewable.
Computer Resources at the Public Health Library
There are several public PCs available, including one ADA access terminal. All require CalNet authentication for full access to the World Wide Web; all allow access to Library resources, including catalogs, databases, and online journals, as well as all .edu, .org, and .gov sites. You may print (using a copy card), or download to a disk from these computers. Complete instructions are at each PC. There is no word processing software on any of these computers.
In addition, the Public Health Library is set up for wireless AirBears access. We will loan you a wireless card if you need one; ask at the Circulation desk.
