The Public Health Library is located on the ground floor of University Hall on the University of California Berkeley campus. The library's services and collections support primarily the School of Public Health and its research units, however anyone is welcome to use our library. See below for a description of the Public Health Library collection.

Use of the Collection

Library services and collections are open to the public. Most of the library's materials circulate for use outside the library. Materials circulate to UCB faculty, staff, and students with valid ID cards. Others who wish to borrow materials must have a current library card issued by Library Privileges, located on the first floor of Doe Library.

Most material is shelved by call number. Recent issues of some high-use journals are on display in an area near the back of the library, arranged in alphabetical order. Reference books are shelved seperately and are categorized into Statistics, Dictionaries, Handbooks, Indexes, etc. Reserve items are shelved behind the Circulation Desk.

A small collection of journal titles, kept separately because of special funding, are shelved alphabetically by title on the back right-hand side of the library. These Unclassed journals have the "call number" UNCL in the catalogs.

Books circulate for one month, subject to recall. Journals circulate for 2 hours, except for the UNCL titles which do not circulate. Journals are non-renewable.

For more information, see Borrowing.

Scanning, Copying, and Printing in the Public Health Library

A scanner and printer are available, located to the left of the Circulation Desk, as you walk into the library through the main front door. No money is accepted. Library patrons must use a Cal 1 Card, Department Card, or a Guest Card. Scanning to a USB flash drive is FREE and scanning to print is 8 cents/11 cents for black and white single sided/double sided printing. Pricing is subject to change.

UC Berkeley students, staff, and faculty can use their Cal 1 Card if there is money on the card.

UC Berkeley departments can request a Cal 1 Department Card for use by multiple users.

Non-UC Berkeley patrons need to ask at the Circulation Desk for a Cal 1 Guest Card to add money onto. Guest cards will require patrons to use a credit card to add money to the card for scanning or printing. A minimum $5 initial deposit must be made on the card. If less than $20 is added to the card, a $1 startup fee will be charged.

For more information, see Printing and Scanning in the Libraries.

Computer Resources at the Public Health Library

There are several public PCs available, including one ADA access terminal. All require CalNet authentication for full access to the World Wide Web. Access to Library resources, including catalogs, databases, and online journals, as well as all .edu, .org, and .gov sites is available without CalNet authentication.

You may print (using a Cal 1 Card, Department Card, or Guest Card) or download to a flash drive or disk from these computers. See above for printing costs. Complete instructions are at each PC. One Edit & Print Station is now available which allows you to use MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to edit and save your document to a flash drive or disk, or to print your document as above.

In addition, the Public Health Library is set up for wireless AirBears access for UCB students, faculty, and staff.
