Selected Indexes in Vision and
Health Sciences
Many resources provided by the
UC Berkeley Library are limited to computers in the UC Berkeley campus
network. This is due to our license agreements with the vendors that provide
these databases. If you're not on the Berkeley campus or using the Berkeley
campus modem pool through Connnecting@Berkeley,
you need to use the Library's proxy

Major Indexes
PubMed provides access to bibliographic
information which includes MEDLINE, the NLM's premier bibliographic database
covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine,
the health care system, and the preclinical sciences. MEDLINE contains
bibliographic citations and author abstracts from more than 4,600 biomedical
journals published in the U.S. and 70 other countries, dating back to the
mid-1960s. Coverage is worldwide, but most records are from English-language
sources or have English abstracts. Full text links to articles are
available to UCB students, faculty & staff from this link.

NLM
Gateway
The NLM Gateway allows users
to search in multiple retrieval systems at the U.S. National Library of
Medicine (NLM). The current Gateway searches MEDLINE/PubMed, OLDMEDLINE,
LOCATORplus (books & book chapters), MEDLINEplus (consumer information),
AIDS Meetings, Health Services Research Meetings and more. OLDMEDLINE
provides bibliographic citations to articles published in the 1960 through
1965 Cumulated Index Medicus and in the 1958 through 1959 Current List
of Medical Literature. No abstracts are available and MeSH headings
are not used.
BIOSIS
Previews via ISI Web of Knowledge 
The online version of Biological
Abstracts & Biological Abstract/RRM, BIOSIS is the most comprehensive
biological sciences database. Indexing 6,000 journals, BIOSIS also indexes
books and conference proceedings on a wide variety of biological and biomedical
topics.

PsycINFO via Cambridge Scientific Abstracts
The PsycINFO database is
an index of psychological literature from 1887 to the present. Produced
by the American Psychological Association, it includes citations to scholarly
journal articles, books, and book chapters, conference proceedings, and
doctoral dissertations.
Visionet
Produced by the Southern
College of Optometry Library, Visionet is the only widely available online
index to the optometric journal literature. Coverage is 1975 - present.
There is some overlap with MEDLINE. Login and password are
required. See Fong Optometry & Health Sciences Library staff
for password and further information.

The Vision Science Reference
Database is a current literature database service provided by the University
of Waterloo Centre for Contact Lens Research (CCLR) in conjunction with
Bausch & Lomb. CCLR staff collect and post information and abstracts
from the most current articles on subjects in ophthalmology and optometry
from professional journals, including major publications not normally
covered by other databases, such as Contact Lens & Anterior Eye, the
CLAO Journal, Contact Lens Spectrum, Optician, Review of Ophthalmology,
etc. One time free registration required.

of Science
Indexes literature from
all science disciplines, covering about 5300 journals. It can be used to
conduct searches on a topic or by author and also to find articles which
cite these works or which use related references. The Web version also
includes Social Science Citation Index and Arts & Humanities Citation
Index.

Citation Reports
Search the JCR Science Edition
and the JCR Social Science Edition to evaluate and compare journals using
citation data and article counts. Use it to find the high impact journals,
most frequently used journals, and the cited half-life of journals. The
Science Edition contains data from roughly 5,000 journals and the Social
Sciences Edition contains data from roughly 1,500 journals. Please

ICON Group and CountryWatch and detailed company profiles for the world's
10,000 largest companies.
CANCERLIT
CANCERLIT is a bibliographic
database that contains more than 1.3 million citations and abstracts from
over 4,000 different sources including biomedical journals, proceedings,
books, reports, and doctoral theses. Coverage is 1963 - present. Produced
by the National Cancer Institute's International Cancer Information Center,
CANCERLIT has been in existence for more than twenty years and contains
references to the vast realm of cancer literature published from 1963 to
the present. CANCERLIT is updated with more than 8,000 records every month.

HealthComm Key
Contains comprehensive summaries
of more than 200 articles, published between 1986 and 1996, about health
communication research and practice, that describe U.S.-based public health
interventions that have communication as a major component.

(Combined Health Information Database) Online
The Combined Health Information
Database provides access to health information and health education resources.

of Science, Technology & Medicine
Contains citations from
the Current Bibliography in the History of Technology, Current Bibliography
of the History of Science, Bibliografia Italiana de Storia della Scienza,
and Wellcome Bibliography of the History of Medicine. It retrieves citations
from journal articles, conference proceedings, books, book reviews, and
dissertations in the history of science, the history of technology, and
allied historical fields in a variety of languages. Relevant topics include

INSPEC
via OVID
INSPEC is produced by the
Institution of Electrical Engineers in Great Britain (IEE), and is the
electronic equivalent of three abstract journals: Physics Abstracts, Electrical
and Electronics Abstracts, Computer and Control Abstracts. It provides
comprehensive coverage of research literature in physics, astronomy, electrical
engineering and electronics, computer science, communications and information
technology, and computers. It also covers such topics as medical informatics
and biomedical computing and engineering.

Bibliographic Information on Dietary Supplements (IBIDS)
Database of published, international,
scientific literature on dietary supplements, including vitamins, minerals,

is the primary source for reports of U.S. government-sponsored research.
NTIS indexes literature produced by U.S. government agencies such as the
Department of Energy, EPA and NASA. Subject coverage is very broad and
includes communications, environmental pollution and control, energy conservation,
health planning, medicine and biology, natural resources and earth sciences,
technology transfer, and transportation. NTIS references reports, translations,
bibliographies, patents, conference papers, and journal articles. Most
NTIS records include abstracts. Coverage starts from 1964.

Index
Population Index, published
since 1935, is the primary reference tool to the world's population literature.
It presents an annotated bibliography of recently published books, journal
articles, working papers, and other material on population topics. The
entire published database is available online and can be searched by author,
subject matter, geographical region, and year of publication. Coverage
includes all fields of interest to demographers, including fertility, mortality,
population size and growth, migration, marriage and the family, research
methodology, projections and predictions, historical demography, and demographic
and economic interrelations.
