- In this article the author discusses several aspects of the impact of American motion pictures on the Italian film industry in the period immediately following World War Two. The author notes that the influx of American-made films on the Italian market did not depress the Italian film industry as has been thought in the past. In addition the author examines the regional comedies that were made as a response to U.S. products, concentrating on films by a number of directors including Luigi Comencini, Dino Risi and Vittorio De Sica.

- The article offers information on the complexity of womanhood. It relates the film "Vincere," directed by Marco Bellocchio, wherein it discusses the characteristics of Ida Dalser, who is said to be a strong and martyr woman. It mentions that Dalser provides the identity of man and the mirror of power, which was implied by Dasler's desire to give her whole life. It adds that the film showcases emblems, devoid faces, and images of unconscious, while the background projects futurism and opera.

- "Analyzes the historical accuracy of Bernardo Bertolucci's film The Last Emperor (1987) by examining the role played by his "secondary consort," Wenxiu, on screen and in real life based on the known facts of Emperor Puyi's conjugal life. Using Puyi's autobiography, The Last Manchu (1967), a biography entitled The Last Empress and the Last Secondary Consort (1984), and the consort's personal diaries, Wenxiu's unhappy nine-year concubinage from the age of 13 is investigated to its conclusion with her unprecedented and successful suit for divorce against the last emperor of the Qing dynasty. Bertolucci's film is lauded for its romanticized loyalty to the emperor's narrative tale even as its narrative license is questioned for fictionalizing Wenxiu's story, raising the issue of the filmmaker's obligation to historical truth." By combining particular genre choices with carefully chosen camera angles De Sica encourages the reader to interpret and respond to images, instead of passively observing them. When considering 'Bicycle Thieves' it is also necessary to find a way to reconcile De Sica's interest in comedy and neo-realism." [Expanded Academic Index]

As a film composer, Morricone acknowledges the director as having the exclusive authority over the entire film. Therefore, it is important that the film composer and the director establish a working understanding of each other's roles in the production. - "The western films made by Italian directors such as Sergio Leone show how Americanism represents a philosophy of action that relates to global issues and themes, transcending the cultural and geographical boundaries of the US. The spaghetti westerns deal primarily with issues such as materialism, social conflict, identity and knowledge that reflect Italian politics of the period when they were created. Moreover, the films' use of physical action, body mechanics and typology of characters are related to traditional Italian comedy stemming from the commedia dell'arte." [Expanded Academic Index]

Among the recurrent themes are those of race, as evidenced in Sergeant Rutledge (1960) and Cheyenne Autumn (1964), and violence, which in this era is more brutal and more graphic, as seen in such Sergio Leone films as A Fistful of Dollars, A Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Explicit sex is another feature of films of this era, as in Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch (1969). The passing of the frontier and the aging of the main protagonist are companion themes seen in such films as Hud (1963), Will Penny (1968), and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)." Visconti's film has a harder time for many reasons including the difficulty of relating narrative visually. Britten is more successful because Mann relied on the music of Gustav Mahler to indicate a mood and opera's musical component can imply themes that are more difficult for dialog or staging." - "This essay examines representations of the Italian working class from the 1930s through the 1970s. I analyze four films produced at four crucial moments in Italian labour and film history (Gli uomini, che mascalzoni!, Mario Camerini, 1932; Ladri di biciclette, Vittorio De Sica, 1946, Rocco e i suoi fratelli, Luchino Visconti, 1960; and Mimi metallurgico ferito nell'onore, Lina Wertmüller, 1972), I discuss the specific political climates that shaped these films' production and reception, paying attention to the role workers were to play as audiences in Communist and Catholic strategies of mass organization. I also highlight continuities of theme and attitude in Italian movies about the working class. A preoccupation with the maintenance of family structures links films by Camerini, De Sica, and Visconti--directors of different cinematic styles, political affiliations, and generation. Only after 1968 do directors such as Wertmüller subject such mindsets and their attendant social practices to sustained critique." [Web of Knowledge]

- "The article presents information on two motion pictures: "The Night Porter," directed by Liliana Cavani, and "Seven Beauties," directed by Lina Wertmüller. There are many similarities between the two motion pictures particularly in the parallels developed between Nazi degeneracy and contemporary decadence. Both films present portraits of the Nazi mentality by developing the relationships between what happened in World War II and what is occurring at the present time. Each film begins with the present, moves back to the past, before returning to its "present" again. In "The Night Porter" the present is the late 1950s in Vienna, Austria. "Seven Beauties" is more immediately set in the time of war and the period just preceding it when Italian dictator Benito Mussolini was assuming power, but this film also ends after the war and carries its message into the present era. "The Night Porter" opens with a definition of place and character. "Seven Beauties" begins with documentary footage of German and Italian battles, and speeches by their leaders." [Ebsco]

- "This paper attempts to explain the recurrent appearance of works of art in the films of Lina Wertmüller. The article asserts that there is a symbolic connection between the artifacts used in her naturalistic 'mise en scene' and the thematic directions, often seemingly chaotic, of her narratives. This correlation between setting and theme brings to light interesting aspects of the directors feminism and politics in general. The films discussed are "Love and Anarchy, Seven Beauties" and "Night Full of Rain." The artifacts employed by this director are the "Marcus Aurelius" statue and the "Neptune Fountain" on the Capitoline hill, "The Roman Forum," copies of the "Dioscuri" statues and an antique statue of the "Aphrodite." Further pieces are the "Ara Pacis" and Bronzino's "Allegory of Love.""

- The article focuses on the political aspects of the film "SWEPT AWAY," directed by Lina Wertmuller. It cites that Wertmuller's film has a deeper and significant message that depicts the dialectical properties of domination and alienation. Moreover, it is noted that Wertmuller uses humor to reveal her political message and her interpretation of the phrase "politics of the unpolitical." It also asserts that her portrayal of sexist behavior in the film has been intended to illustrate the essence of merging the political with the personal.
