"Analyzes the historical accuracy of Bernardo Bertolucci's film The Last Emperor (1987) by examining the role played by his "secondary consort," Wenxiu, on screen and in real life based on the known facts of Emperor Puyi's conjugal life. Using Puyi's autobiography, The Last Manchu (1967), a biography entitled The Last Empress and the Last Secondary Consort (1984), and the consort's personal diaries, Wenxiu's unhappy nine-year concubinage from the age of 13 is investigated to its conclusion with her unprecedented and successful suit for divorce against the last emperor of the Qing dynasty. Bertolucci's film is lauded for its romanticized loyalty to the emperor's narrative tale even as its narrative license is questioned for fictionalizing Wenxiu's story, raising the issue of the filmmaker's obligation to historical truth." "Vittorio De Sica's 'Bicycle Thieves' has traditionally been read as a film that accurately represents reality, but such a reading overlooks the film's high degree of artistry. By combining particular genre choices with carefully chosen camera angles De Sica encourages the reader to interpret and respond to images, instead of passively observing them. When considering 'Bicycle Thieves' it is also necessary to find a way to reconcile De Sica's interest in comedy and neo-realism." [Expanded Academic Index]

"Ennio Morricone is unique as a film music composer due to the fact that he composes for concert halls as well and uses sound effects in his music not usually found in film scores. As a film composer, Morricone acknowledges the director as having the exclusive authority over the entire film. Therefore, it is important that the film composer and the director establish a working understanding of each other's roles in the production. Morricone is known for his score in Sergio Leone's Western films and Giuseppe Tornatore's 'Cinema Paradiso' (1988)." [Expanded Academic Index]

"Aldrich, Leone and Vera Cruz: Style and Substance Over the Border." Screening the Past: An International, Refereed, Electronic Journal of Visual Media and History [Australia] 2000 (10)
"Compares the "baroque" style of Robert Aldrich's 1954 film Vera Cruz, starring Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster, based on a true story about two American soldiers of fortune taking a shipment of gold through rebel territory for Emperor Maximillian, with the 1960's "spaghetti westerns" of Sergio Leone, who appropriated Aldrich's key plot elements, such as money and the double cross, as well as Aldrich's unique stylistic elements, for Leone's own films. This made Aldrich's influence more obvious in European westerns of the 1960's than their American counterparts." [America: History and Life]

" Sergio Leone's 1984 motion picture 'Once Upon A Time in America' stars Robert De Niro and James Woods. The movie features 'God Bless America' at the start and finish and it is suggested that the film aims to offer a typical picture rather than the portrayal of what is essential a number of criminals. The resurrection of Max is analysed, along with the role of rape and sexual themes." [Expanded Academic Index]

"The western films made by Italian directors such as Sergio Leone show how Americanism represents a philosophy of action that relates to global issues and themes, transcending the cultural and geographical boundaries of the US. The spaghetti westerns deal primarily with issues such as materialism, social conflict, identity and knowledge that reflect Italian politics of the period when they were created. Moreover, the films' use of physical action, body mechanics and typology of characters are related to traditional Italian comedy stemming from the commedia dell'arte." [Expanded Academic Index]

Among the recurrent themes are those of race, as evidenced in Sergeant Rutledge (1960) and Cheyenne Autumn (1964), and violence, which in this era is more brutal and more graphic, as seen in such Sergio Leone films as A Fistful of Dollars, A Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Explicit sex is another feature of films of this era, as in Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch (1969). The passing of the frontier and the aging of the main protagonist are companion themes seen in such films as Hud (1963), Will Penny (1968), and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)."
