Video and Sound Materials
The permanent collection of the Center comprises materials in a wide range of subject fields, with emphasis on titles which have interdisciplinary interest. The collection includes dramatic performances, literary adaptations, speeches, documentaries (including an excellent sampling of works by important independent film and video makers), lectures and demonstrations. Virtually every in-print video version of Shakespeare's plays; major PBS series; radio documentaries and interviews from the Pacific Archives and National Public Radio, and an excellent study-level collection of international cinema works are just a few of the resources you will find in the Media Center. The Center also owns a very large collection of historical film footage in videodisc format--The Video Encyclopedia of the 20th Century. Arrangements can be made to have parts of this public domain film collection copied onto videotape supplied by the user for non-commercial use.
In addition to its collection of media and computer software, MRC is a receiving site for SCOLA, an international news broadcasting service SCOLA is also currently received by the Language Laboratory (Dwinelle Hall), and the Unit III Academic Study Center.
Equipment
A variety of equipment is available in the Center to support use of the Center's collection. Faculty, students, and staff are also welcome to bring their own materials to the Center for use on any of the available equipment.
Computer Materials
The MRC holdings include a growing collection of tutorial and demonstration software with which users can learn to operate popular software such as WordPerfect, Microsoft Word, Lotus 1-2-3, PageMaker Plus, and Hypercard. Hardware in MRC also supports access to a growing collection of commercially-produced multimedia titles, as well as Internet access to moving and still image collections. MRC computer hardware may not be used for general applications purposes, such as word processing, or for use of software other than those titles in MRC's collection.
Catalogs
The complete holdings of the Media Resources Center are represented in both the GLADIS and MELVYL online catalogs. Because the MELVYL catalog is the only catalog which currently allows the designation of specific formats and collection locations in searching for an item, it is the most effective place to look for MRC titles. Along with these online listings, the Media Center also maintains printed subject videographies which may be consulted at the Center's circulation desk. These subject listings are also currently available online via the library's Web server.
Research Services
MRC maintains a good collection of printed and computerized reference resources relating to audiovisual and other instructional technologies. A collection of catalogs and advertisements from major AV software and hardware vendors is also maintained. Included in MRC's reference collection are indexes for major broadcast news archives, including the Vanderbilt Archive and the Purdue University Public Affairs Archives. MRC also subscribes to the Broadcast News CD-ROM, an index and full-text database of television transcripts.
The staff of the Center are available to help locate information on specific titles or subjects, or to answer questions about other media resources on the Berkeley campus. Appointments may be made with the head of the Center for in-depth research consultation in the areas of film, television, and video (643-8566; email: Gary Handman (ghandman@library.berkeley.edu)
