" Latin American cinema produced by women has been existing since the late 19th century when the art was first introduced by European immigrants to the continent. It is surprising to note that women in countries such as Brazil and Mexico produced and directed a far greater number of films within the male-dominated industry than their North American counterparts. Nevertheless, these female filmmakers, in both continents, have experienced the same frustrations in their inability to freely present feminist themes." [Expanded Academic Index]

El Nuevo cine latinoamericano New cinema of Latin America[Videorecording]
I. Cine humilde = Cinema of the humble -- II. El largo camino = The long road. Written, produced, and directed by Michael Chanan ; photography by Peter Chappell. Part I traces the origins and development of the new cinema movement in the countries of Latin America from the early 1950s to the present and examines its political and social themes. In part II the political and cultural dimensions of the new cinema since the 1960s are explored in greater detail. Examines the new cinema's political concerns, its desire to give expression to the traditional cultures, national identities, and everyday experiences of Latin Americans, and the growing prominence of feminist cinema. Both parts include commentary by directors and others active in the new cinema movement and excerpts from numerous films.

The article focuses on the Mexican film Like Water for Chocolate (1991) to address the question of how women can use food as a path to power. The film is directed by Alfonso Arau based on his wife Laura Esquivel's screenplay. It uses lush and sensual images of foods and cooking to articulate a rich picture of family and gender. The film also portrays several characters' relationship to food, and through food to each other, and suggests multiple ways women can carve out diversely empowering or demeaning roles from food.

"In recent years, food has played an increasingly prominent role in the mainstream media in a variety of ways. As one manifestation of this trend, "food films" have coalesced into a bona fide genre in contemporary popular culture. In this essay, I seek to contribute to the growing conversation regarding the symbolic role and rhetorical function of mediated representations of food. In an analysis of three films of that genre - Like Water for Chocolate, Chocolat, and Woman on Top - I argue that these films are unified not only insofar as they feature food but also, and more importantly, with respect to how they use food to engage and assuage anxieties attendant to contemporary cultural ambiguities and permeabilities, especially around race/ethnicity and gender. Specifically, I contend that these films offer food as a rhetorical device through which discourses of privilege are reconciled with and restabilised against contemporary practices of desire and consumption, especially (and increasingly) for and of the "Other."

Women in Cuban film moved from stereotypes to individuals and from history to story by the end of the 1980s. Films by Mayra Segura, Mayra Villasis, Isabel Moreno and Rosa Leon in 'Mujer transparente' created female characters whose bodies represented female experience, rather than passive actors with identities determined by history and society. This reappropriation allowed women to become independent subjects for exploration.

"The phenomenon of Imperfect Cinema in Cuba is discussed. The Cuban film industry was established by the Cuban Government in 1959, shortly after the Revolution's victory. Incorporating documentary and direct cinema techniques into its films, the industry gained an international reputation, and by 1970 its revolutionary ideas had become known in Latin America as Imperfect Cinema and hailed as the continent's response to Hollywood. This cinema, with a preferred form of critical socialist realism, aimed to present a wealth of nonjudgemental, nonprescriptive expositions of the problems faced by "people who struggle" as a process. Focusing on the themes of masculinity and modernity in two interrelated films--De cierta manera/One Way or Another (1974), directed by Sara Gomez, and Hasta cierto punto/Up to a Point (1983), directed by Tomas Gutierrez Alea, the writer goes on to explain Imperfect Cinema's enduring significance, arguing that the post-Marxist films of the 19" [Art Index]

"The writer critiques two articles on Cuban cinema: "Modernity, masculinity and Imperfect Cinema in Cuba" by Catherine Davies, and "Critical mass of Cuban cinema: art as the vanguard of society" by Oscar Quiros. He observes that both writers choose films from different moments in Cuban filmmaking that they call "Marxist" because they critique the Cuban Revolution, and that they argue that their preferred film aesthetic represents the greatest freedom because its filmmakers take up a position most distant from and most critical of Cuban "authority" or state power. He questions Davies's reading of Sara Gomez's film One Way or Another and Quiros's version of Cuban film history, maintaining that although the authors argue strongly for antagonist aesthetic visions, they both take bourgeois aesthetic approaches and oppose the Cuban Revolution's historical reality." "Humberto Solas's work encapsulates the cinematic principles and social concerns of the New Latin-American Cinema, a movement that began in the late 1950s as a reaction to the continent's economic and cultural dependency and underdevelopment. A leading film theorist and practitioner, Solas has played a major role as a guide for young filmmakers and as a participant in the policies and practices of ICAIC, the Cuban Film Institute. His films deal thematically with colonization and decolonization in cultural and psychological terms; feature innovative camera work, complex set designs, stylized acting, and a baroque visual style; and highlight symbolism, surrealism, location in spatial and temporal terms, and music as a narrative form. In an interview, Solas discusses such topics as Cuba's relationship with the United States, the emergence of artistic innovations in Cuban film, and the interconnection between the development of film and the concept of nationhood." "Focusing on the aesthetics of both Imperfect and Perfect Cinema, the writer assesses the shifting interactions between Marxist ideology and the Cuban cinematic apparatus between 1959 and 1989. Established in March 1959, the Instituto Cubano de Arte e Industria Cinematografica produced a series of feature-length movies during the late 1960s and early 1970s, known as Imperfect Cinema. This type implicitly and explicitly manifested the official Marxism-Leninism of the Cuban Polity. Its style was defined by the specific techniques and qualities contextualized in the aesthetics of content over form typical of orthodox Marxism, such as excessive movements of the camera. By the late 1970s, signs of aesthetic change appeared: Perfect Cinema did not employ the devices used by Imperfect Cinema or other imposed aesthetic formulae. Moreover, its post-Marxist approach to film significantly deviated from the orthodox ideology, operating under its own, rather than the Polity's" logic. [Art Index]

"The future's past: re-imaging the Cuban Revolution." Afterimage v 26 no5 Mar/Apr 1999. p. 13-15
"The current pop appropriation of images of Che Guevara and the Cuban Revolution, as well as other iconography of past revolutions is visible in many American advertising campaigns of the 1990s, which aim to equate socialist revolutionary iconography with consumer freedom. The status of such iconography and the lived experience of past radical social movements for the Left as they try to rebuild opposition movements in the face of the globalization of free-market capitalism is complex and riddled with ambiguities, however; for example, if such movements have failed, as is being claimed, it is questionable whether their iconography still has the potential for inspiration by linking the present with an idealistic past. Two new works, Leandro Katz's film El Dia Que Me Quieras (The Day That You'll Love Me) and Steve Fagin's video TropiCola, investigate and implicitly raise these issues by taking up the fate of these radical utopian experiments, specifically the Cuban Revolution. The writer examines the works in detail." [Art Index]

Daniel Diaz Torres's film 'Alice in Wondertown,' the idea for which originated in Lewis Carroll's works 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking Glass,' promises to be the most controversial film in Cuban film history. Torres reveals that he wanted to integrate the spirit of Carroll's books with his personal sense of reality. Alice, the movie's protagonist, has an air of naivete and candor. Torres admits that the story for the film was conceived in response to the debates that followed the campaign of rectification in 1986.

""Fresa y chocolate" or "Strawberry and Chocolate" is a Cuban movie that has received international and domestic awards. The surprise is twofold - that a film about homosexuality was so widely distributed and that such a film was made in socialist Cuba, about the situation of homosexuals in Cuba. It is a complex well-made film that deals with questions of national identity and the tensions between hetero- and homosexuality, socialism and capitalism, desire and power. It also deals with religious freedom in socialist Cuba." [Expanded Academic Index]

"Jorge Perugorria played the part of the homosexual, David, in the film, 'Strawberry and Chocolate,' by Tomas Gutierrez Alea and Juan Carlos Tabio. Although not prepared to admit that Cuban society has learned to accept homosexuals as part of the Revolution, Perugorria claims that Cubans have matured enough to accept the reality of homosexuals in the community. Intolerance against homosexuals forms the central point in the film, a subject which Cuban audiences felt needed to be dwelt upon." [Expanded Academic Index]

"Whit Stillman's new release 'Barcelona' represents a criticism of American social policy that bears a tinge of phallic aggression. Tomas Gutierrez Alea's 'Strawberry and Chocolate' reveals a somber and tender portrayal of homosexual life. The events of 'Barcelona' occur in the last decade of cold war whereas, 'Strawberry and Chocolate' represents the events of 1979. The basis of both the films is the relationship between two men as they deal with one another, rather than interacting with foreign women." [Expanded Academic Index]

"Cuban director Tomas Gutierrez Alea's 'Strawberry and Chocolate' depicts a homosexual's struggle to establish his identity in a discriminatory world. The film expresses romanticism in art and its reflection in the platonic friendship that Diego, the homosexual, wants to develop with David, a Marxist sociology student. The film has been critically acclaimed in Cuba and in Spain, where it bested several American commercial films." [Expanded Academic Index]

"Director Tomas Gutierrez Alea's Cuban film 'Strawberry and Chocolates' on Cuban gays is flawed in its portrayal of homosexuality. The narrative of this dialogue-oriented film is essentially heterosexual and middle class. Known for his anti-gay stance, the director has mildly treated the film's theme. The film reinforces contempt for the supposed lack of sexual potency of homosexuals as a reflection of Marxist obsession with productive potency." [Expanded Academic Index]

"A review of Leon Ichaso's motion picture Bitter Sugar. The movie tells the story of an idealistic Cuban honor student who realizes the hypocrisy of the system that he once endorsed. Exposing the scandalous statistics that the Cuban government would rather hide, such as the existence of 30,000 teenage prostitutes, it conveys a vehement anti-Castro message. This precluded Ichaso from filming in Havana, opting for Santo Domingo instead and adding second-unit Havana footage. Crucial landmarks were captured with an army-surplus camera that was over 50 years old, and several scenes were shot with a Hi-8 camera; on location, Kodak's 5222 Double-X stock and Arriflex BL were used. Extras who had recently left Cuba were hired to add an authentic feel to the movie." [Art Index]

Pick, Zuzana M.
"An interview with María Luisa Bemberg." (Interview) Journal of Film and Video v44, n3-4 (Fall-Wntr, 1992):76 (7 pages).
María Luisa Bemberg, an Argentinian filmmaker of repute, has several major films to her credit including 'Senora de nadie' (Nobody's wife), 'Camila,' 'Yo, la peor de todas' (I, the Worst Woman of All) and 'Miss Mary.' She reveals that her objective in making films on historical women in Argentina was not based on grand ideals such as highlighting the importance of women in history. She found the subject of Camila O'Gorman, a social rebel in 19th-century Argentina, challenging and decided to project her as daring rather than submissive. María admits she is easily bored by the battle scenes in historical films and prefers to adopt an impressionist approach in making historical films.

"Brazilian Cinema." Film Comment, May/Jun84, Vol. 20 Issue 3, p56, 4p
"Brazilian cinema has come of age. The barbarian of filmdom, as director Carlos Diegues calls it, has graduated from obscurity to an ambitious production schedule of nearly 100 movies a year. The industry likes to call itself the Hollywood of the Third World, and it has some impressive box-office stats to buttress its case. In the past five years alone, it has produced a half-dozen international hits." [EBSCO]

"Despite a lack of state financial support, Chilean cinema thrived in the decade following the 1990 end of Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship. Many of the films produced, including Silvio Caiozzi's 'La Luna en el Espejo' [The moon in the mirror] (1990), Miguel Littín's 'Los Náufragos' [The castaways] (1994), and Andrés Wood's 'Reunión de Familia' [Family reunion] (1994), used a father figure to address the dictatorship's impact."
