WebGenDB (WGDB) is the UC Berkeley Library's digital objects content management system. The process of describing digital objects begins with inputting information into WGDB.
WGDB implements a structural approach for metadata input, reflecting the hierarchical nature of archival description as well as the materials within the collections being described as digital objects. WGDB also has a simple interface for inputting single image objects.
WGDB houses the descriptive, structural and administrative metadata for the materials being digitized for web presentation, and outputs the metadata using the Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard (METS) format.
A Library Applications & Publishing Group (LAP) staff member works with the project lead to select the metadata field to appear in the initial data entry screens and conducts preliminary training. In addition LAP collects technical metadata on the digital files so we need to work with whoever produces the files to be sure we get the required data.
WGDB consists of 4 components:
- GenDB: The database and web front end. Consists of a number of fields that can be configured for each project.
- GenX: Creates METS objects from the content in GenDB.
- GenSearch: Optional. Can be configured to search a collection of METS objects.
- GenView: Used to view METS objects.
