Accessioning and Processing Archivist
The University of California, Berkeley, is seeking an Accessioning and Processing Archivist whose primary responsibility will be to accession and appraise manuscripts collections. This is a part-time (.5 FTE), career-track appointment. The successful candidate will have experience in manuscript collection appraisal and accessioning, demonstrated understanding of archival description and materials, work experience with project management, familiarity with archival standards (EAD, METS, MARC, MODS), and strong communication skills.
The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation's premiere public universities that serves 23,000 undergraduates, 9,000 graduate students, and 1,500 faculty members. Current collections include approximately 10 million volumes and 56,000 current serial titles. Library facilities on the Berkeley campus include the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, The Bancroft Library, the East Asian Library, and more than 20 subject specialty and Affiliated libraries that serve specific subject areas and the professional schools. The Library is a member of the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), and the Research Libraries Group (RLG), and is an active participant in the California Digital Library.
The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the largest and most heavily used libraries of manuscripts, rare books, and special collections in the United States. As the primary center of special collections within the library system at Berkeley, Bancroft supports major research and reference activities and plays a leading role in the development of research collections. Bancroft holdings include over 500,000 volumes, 55,000 linear feet of manuscripts, 8 million photographs and other pictorial materials, 72,000 microforms, and 23,000 maps. Bancroft Technical Services (BTS) is the unit responsible for all of the technical operations of the Bancroft Library. BTS employs approximately 22 career and non-career staff and currently manages fifteen grant-funded projects. BTS operations include: acquisitions, cataloging (original and copy), archival, manuscripts, and pictorial collections processing, and digital archiving. BTS is responsible for acquiring, preserving, and providing access to the library's collections of printed materials, manuscripts, photographs, magnetic media, and other materials in a variety of formats. BTS takes a leadership role in setting national standards for technical processing, digital access, and digital archiving of rare books, archives, and special collections materials. A significant percentage of BTS processing and digital archiving projects is funded by grants or donors, leading BTS actively to partner with other campus and library units and with a variety of institutions throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, the state, and the nation.
The Accessioning and Processing Archivist has full responsibility for managing the intake of manuscript collections and supervising processing support staff consisting of student assistants, and volunteers. The Archivist establishes workflow and work schedules, and creates mechanisms for reduction of collection backlogs. He/she assists with the packing and shipment of collections using a rental van or moving company from donor sites. Trains unit staff and edits/reviews unit staff work-product, especially the creation of collection records in OCLC and the local collection management system. He/she plans the goals for collection intake and develops accessioning plans for collections in coordination with manuscript unit staff and curators. The Archivist works closely with curators in the assessment of collections and in selection of collection materials. He/she is also responsible for the administration of new acquisitions and works with the Digital Collections Unit to develop and maintain tracking tools.
UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, to work effectively in a shared decision-making environment and to be active professionally. Professional contributions beyond the primary responsibilities are required for advancement in the Librarian series. The successful candidate will show promise or evidence of such contributions.

Professional librarians at the University of California librarians are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, the University Council - American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is in the bargaining unit.
