CLASSIFICATION OVERVIEW

All jobs on the Berkeley Campus are classified with a title name and title code. For each title, there is a description of the position. The creation and description of job classifications is a task done at the systemwide level of the university; individual campuses do not create new job classifications. Rates of pay may vary by campus for the same classification. HistoryThe Assistant series (Assistant I-IV) was created in 1967 to provide generic job titles for positions held primarily by students. Most student jobs on the Berkeley campus are currently classified in the Assistant series. As a result of a campus restructuring of student wage programs, Student Assistant pay moved from a step-based to a broad open range system effective October 1, 2000. In 1990 most student library positions were classified and paid at two levels: one for regular and one for night and weekend workleaders. In early 1991 the Student Assistant classifications were reintroduced, providing the Library with a three tier system of student jobs. *Current and In-Place Titles and Pay Rates (through June 30, 2007):
In 2007, the Library reviewed the student library employee wage program, substantially increasing student wages while streamlining levels and simplifying procedures back to a two level system. **Titles and Pay Rates: Announced Pay Program - 2007. Implementation Date : July 1, 2007.
For example, a student may work as a Student Assistant-Regular in a unit during regular day hours when a supervisor is present. The same student may be assigned to be in charge of a subject library in the evening with responsibilities over other student employees and the library. This worker would be paid at the Student Assistant-N/W Workleader rate. Outside of these workleader responsibilities, dual-rated students are paid at the Student Assistant-Regular rate for their primary job. The student will be dual-rated as a Student Assistant-Regular and a Student Assistant N/W workleader in the payroll database and Kronos following Kronos transfer guidelines for two different payrates. Dual AppointmentsStudents may be dual-rated and hold two appointments: i.e. Student Assistant-Regular and Student Assistant- N/W workleader. This is a normal new hire procedure for students who work in public service branches and who are paid at the workleader level for when they work alone and in charge of the unit on nights and weekends. Outside of these workleader responsibilities, dual-rated students are paid at the Student Assistant-Regular rate for their primary job.HOME |
