The University of California, Berkeley seeks an enthusiastic and talented librarian to catalog serials in all formats in a variety of languages and subjects.

 

The Environment

Reporting to the Head of Serials Cataloging, the incumbent collaborates in the planning, development and implementation of sensible and effective policies and procedures for cataloging and providing access to serials in all formats. In particular, the Serials Cataloger will serve as the department’s specialist on issues of bibliographic control related to electronic and digital resources, which may include the use of non-MARC metadata schema for access to specific collections. The incumbent must be flexible, innovative and able to work in a diverse and openly collaborative work environment. The successful candidate will provide training and contribute to the development and maintenance of documentation to support the needs of staff within and beyond the Serials Cataloging unit.

The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation’s premiere public universities, serving 23,000 undergraduates, 9,000 graduate students, and 1,500 faculty. Current collections include approximately 10 million volumes and 56,000 current serial titles. Library facilities on the Berkeley campus include the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, The Bancroft Library, the East Asian Library and more than 20 additional libraries serving specific subject areas and the professional schools. The Library is a member of the Center for Research Libraries (CRL) and the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC). The Library is an active participant in the California Digital Library. The Library has a current operations budget of $35 million and a current collections budget of $22 million, and employs about 375 full-time staff and more than 600 part-time students.

The Technical Services Department is responsible for ordering, receiving, and providing access to the Library's collections. The department consists of four divisions: Copy Cataloging and Monographic Receiving, Collections Core Services, Gifts and Exchange Division, and the Original Cataloging Division. Serials Cataloging is a unit within the Original Cataloging Division.

The Original Cataloging Division of the Technical Services Department is responsible for the original cataloging of monographs, serials, microforms, audio-visual media and electronic resources in all languages, except Chinese, Japanese and Korean, for the collections of the Doe/Moffitt Libraries and the subject specialty libraries. Currently, 14.5 FTE original catalogers staff the Original Cataloging Division of the Department. The Library follows national cataloging standards. Bibliographic records are loaded into OCLC and the University of California's MELVYL Online Catalog for the ten campuses.

 

Responsibilities

UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in Library-wide planning and governance, to be able to work comfortably and effectively in a shared decision-making environment, and to be active professionally. In order to advance in the Librarian series, the successful candidate is expected to show evidence of professional growth and contributions beyond the primary assignment. The successful candidate will show promise or evidence of such contributions.

Professional librarians at UC are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council – American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is in the bargaining unit.

Librarians are entitled to appropriate professional leave, two days per month of vacation leave, one day per month of sick leave, and all other benefits granted to non-faculty academic personnel.
