The Environment

The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation’s premiere public universities. In a highly-diverse and intellectually-rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 23,000 undergraduate students, 9,000 graduate students, and 1,500 faculty. The Library is comprised of 20 libraries, including the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, collectively offering extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build their related research skills. The Library has a collection of more than 10 million volumes and a budget of over $35 million with nearly 400 full-time employees and more than 600 part-time student employees. Through participation in exciting initiatives such as the Google Digitization Project, UC System’s WorldCat Local pilot, and New Directions Initiative, the Library continues to explore new approaches and roles for research libraries. The Education/Psychology and Social Welfare Libraries are nearby each other, supporting the faculty, staff and students in their various disciplines within the Graduate School of Education, the Psychology Department, and the School of Social Welfare. They are two of the 15 Subject Specialty Libraries. The collections in the various schools and department reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the UC Berkeley community, and serve the diverse teaching and research needs.

The Education/Psychology Library serves approximately 110 faculty members, nearly 600 graduate students, and nearly 1000 undergraduates. The Library's collections include approximately 145,000 volumes, and access to over 2000 education and psychology related journals in print and electronic formats. The Social Welfare Library serves 43 faculty, 250 graduate students and 260 undergraduate group majors. The Library holds approximately 36,000 volumes. The combined libraries have a staff of 2 librarians, 3.5 full-time library assistants and several student assistants.

Responsibilities

The Head of the Education/Psychology and Social Welfare Libraries reports to the Associate University Librarian and Director for Public Services and Subject Specialty Libraries (Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences and Sciences.) The Head is responsible for setting priorities in support of the University's teaching and research missions, and shares in decision-making processes concerning library-wide planning and governance.

Areas of overall administrative responsibility include management of the Education/Psychology and Social Welfare Library budget and operations (including facilities), staff recruitment, supervision and staff development. It is expected that the Head of these libraries will develop strong connections with faculty and students in order to address collection and service needs creatively and effectively.

UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in Library-wide planning and governance, to work effectively in a shared decision-making environment, and to participate in professional and scholarly organizations at the local and national levels.
