The Kresge Engineering Library at the University of California, Berkeley seeks an energetic, creative, and service-oriented librarian to develop and implement services and collections in support of the information needs of the campus engineering community and to join an innovative and collaborative staff within the science and engineering libraries.

The Environment

The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nations’ premier public universities serving 24,000 undergraduate students, 10,000 graduate students, and 1,500 faculty. The Library is comprised of 20 libraries, encompassing a full range of subject specialties, with a collection of include more than ten million volumes. Berkeley is an active participant in the activities and collections of the California Digital Library (CDL). The Library has a budget of over $35 million with nearly 375 FTE employees and more than 600 part-time student employees.

The Kresge Engineering Library is one of eight science and engineering libraries of the UC Berkeley Library system. The Engineering Library staff actively support the research and instructional needs of the College of Engineering, serving approximately 275 faculty, 1,650 graduate students, and 2,700 undergraduates in seven engineering departments. The collection includes over 250,700 volumes, access to more than 2,400 engineering-related journals in print and electronic formats, and a substantial technical report collection. The Engineering Library’s website (http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/ENGI/) is a gateway to a rich collection of electronic resources, including engineering journals and databases, reference works, and books. The staff consists of 3 librarians, 3.5 FTE library assistants, and approximately 3.5 FTE student assistants.

Responsibilities

The Reference and Outreach Librarian will have lead responsibility for the Engineering Library’s reference and public services, including circulation and document delivery. This Librarian will coordinate and provide reference services, work in partnership with colleagues to develop new services, and select online and print materials for the reference collection. This librarian will also participate in existing Library instructional activities and help develop new ones using emerging technologies. The Reference and Outreach Librarian is responsible for collection development in one or more engineering disciplines and serves as faculty liaison for those departments. The Reference and Outreach Librarian has oversight responsibility for circulation services, including the supervision of 1 FTE. This Librarian will also contribute to web content development and other special projects. He or she will develop and coordinate library marketing and outreach materials such as newsletters, displays and blog postings. This Librarian adapts and develops technologically innovative services to meet the information needs of the campus engineering community, and contributes to the joint services of the science and engineering libraries on campus. UCB librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, to be able to work comfortably in a shared decision-making environment, and to be active professionally.
