***Preliminary Program***
"Faculty Perspectives on Professional Library Services
In An Era of Systemwide Planning"
[Print version Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) file]

Description
During the past several years, the University as a whole has recognized the importance of coordinated, strategic action with respect to library services. As a result of this growing awareness, which is shared by many stakeholders, including the administration, the faculty, librarians, and the library administration, a robust "culture" of system-wide planning has sprung into being. This new culture of coordinated action has created many opportunities to improve service, extend new services, and maximize the effectiveness of the University’s investment in its libraries.

As key stakeholders and leaders via shared governance, the University faculty plays an important role in advising the President and University administration on all matters pertaining to the libraries. LAUC shares this charge with the faculty, and has worked closely with the University Librarians and the faculty to further the objectives of the libraries. Through the formation of SOPAG and its common interest groups, and through SLASIAC with its representation of senior campus leaders, the University has extended the dialogue about library services very widely. LAUC seeks to explore the potential of this new "era" at its Fall Assembly.

This program will be a panel discussion comprised of members of the Academic Senate’s systemwide University Committee on Library, together with some members of campus divisional senate library committees. LAUC has suggested the following topics as starting points for a dialogue:

  • Library Collections: Local, statewide, or both?

  • The nature of collections: Print, digital, and the balance between the two

  • Reference and research support: Successes and challenges from a faculty viewpoint

  • The Library within the University: Where are we headed?

Speakers

  • Ben Crow (Sociology, Santa Cruz), Incoming Chair, UCOL

  • Martin London (Anesthesia), San Francisco), Member, UCOL

  • Andre Ouelette (Pathology, Irvine), Member, Irvine Academic Senate Committee on Research, Computing, and Library Resources
