Professor P. Buford Price is the Dean of of Physical Sciences, which is comprised of the departments of  Astronomy, Geology &Geophysics, Mathematics, Physics and Statistics.  In a recent National Research Council report, the overall ranking of the doctoral programs in the physical sciences was ranked number one.  Research facilities include Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, the Seismological Laboratory, the Radio Astronomy Laboratory, the Space Sciences Laboratory, the Center for Particle Astrophysics, and the Center for Atmospheric Sciences.  Price has been a Professor of Physics at Berkeley since 1969. 

The Doreen B. Townsend Center for the Humanities

The Doreen B. Townsend Center for the Humanities gathers the creative and diverse energies of the humanities at Berkeley and enables them to take new form for new audiences.  ; The Center was established through the vision and generous bequest of Mrs. Townsend in 1987.  Its programs and services promote research, teaching, and discussion throughout the humanities and related interpretive sciences at Berkeley. 

Librarians Association of the University of California, Berkeley

LAUC-B serves in an advisory capacity to the Chancellor and the Library administration on professional and governance matters of concern to all librarians; on standards, rights, privileges, and obligations of members of the Librarian Series of the University; and on the planning, evaluation,and implementation of programs, services, or technological changes in the libraries of the University of California, Berkeley.  LAUC-B also works with statewide LAUC on matters of University-wide concern. 

LAUC-B is one of nine divisions of the Librarians Association of the University of California, which is an official unit of the University. Membership in LAUC includes all persons in the University holding appointments half-time or more in the librarian series, or in any one of the following titles: University Librarian, Associate University Librarian, Assistant University Librarian, Law Librarian, Associate Law Librarian, Assistant Law Librarian, or in the same series or titles in an acting capacity. 

San Francisco Bay Area Book Council

Founded in 1989 by local publishers and booksellers who were inspired by the rich tradition of the Bay Area publishing, bookselling, and printing industry, the mission of the San Francisco Bay Area Book Council is to create, deepen, and expand a love of reading and of books; to support programs that promote literary excellence and innovation; and to strengthen relationships between the public and the publishing community. 

Among the Book Council programs is the Annual Book Festival 
( which is being held this year on November 7-8, 1998 at the Concourse Exhibition Center, 8th and Brannan Streets, in San Francisco’s SoMa district.   The Book Festival brings together an eclectic array of independent booksellers, literary, multicultural and small presses, major publishing houses, literary arts groups, and non-profit community organizations, who all invite the public to come and celebrate the written word. 

UC Berkeley Academic Senate

The Academic Senate is empowered by The Borad of Regents to exercise direct control over academic matters of central importance to the University. In doing so, the Senate has final authority for the approval and supervision of all courses (except those in the Boalt School of Law) and the review of all academic programs and units.

The Berkeley Division is composed of elected and appointed faculty officials who serve one to two-year limited terms in campus governance positions. The deliberative functions of the Division are carried out by 33 Standing Committees, Councils, and Special Committees. The charges and authority of some of these committees include: academic apointment and promotion matters and FTE allocation; policies and practices affecting the composition of the Berkeley undergraduate student and graduate population; annual and long-range academic and physical planning; allocation of resources and establishment or disestablishment of educational units; and conducting investigations regarding complaints made against members of the faculty. The Divisional Council, which acts on behalf of the Division on matters other than legislative matters retained by the Division is responsible for the coordination of the activities of its committees through strategic direction, research and analysis, planning and policy development, and articulating the philosophy of the Division. 

UC Berkeley Extension

UC Berkeley Extension provides high-quality continuing adult education courses. In addition to classrooms which are located throughout the San Francisco Bay Area UC Berkeley Extension offers a full range of online courses. Courses address the current needs of the general public, the professions, business and industry and are consistent with the academic standards of the University of California at Berkeley. 

UC Berkeley Library

The Library at the University of California, Berkeley contains some of the finest research collections in the United States. Library holdings include over eight million print volumes, and a significant number of maps, manuscripts, photographs, video and sound recordings, as well as a growing collection of materials in electronic formats.  The Library includes the Doe (Main) Library, the Bancroft Library, Moffitt Library, and more than twenty branch libraries serving a variety of academic disciplines. In addition, there are a number of "affiliated libraries", which contain specialized research collections of unique and often difficult to find materials associated with research units, institutes, academic departments and professional schools on the Berkeley campus. 

UC Berkeley School of Information Management & Systems

The School of Information Management and Systems (SIMS) is Berkeley's newest school, now in its second year of operation.   The mission of SIMS is to educate information managers in the skills of locating, organizing, manipulating, filtering and presenting information.  SIMS graduates are expected to be familiar with the technology used to store, organize,and retrieve information in business, government, libraries, and academic settings.  In addition, they are prepared to not only manage technology but manage information and people as well.  To accomplish the latter SIMS students are educated to understand the economic and social environments in which their organization functions and be familiar with the relevant issues in law, economics, ethics, and management.
