Dan Krummes, Librarian Emeritus
Dan Krummes, until recently the Director of the Transportation Library, has been named a Librarian Emeritus, joining a small and select group. UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau in his confirmation letter wrote: "This honor is indication of the esteem in which you are held by your colleagues at the Harmer E. Davis Transportation Library and on the campus. It is granted in thanks for your many years of devoted service to the University and to your profession, and your unique contributions to the Berkeley campus."
Dan was in charge of the Transportation Library from 1992 to 2006. His exceptional leadership was recognized in October 2005 with the award of Distinguished University Librarian, the highest honor bestowed by the University upon campus librarians.
Dan joined the Library in 1976 and served as Chief Cataloger from 1981 to 1992.
A member of the Special Libraries Association for more than 25 years, he was very active in the SLA's Transportation Division serving as Division Chair in 1991-1992. He was also on the board of the SLA's San Francisco Bay Region Chapter from 1987-1989, chairing several committees. His involvement with the Transportation Research Board included two terms as the secretary of the Library and Information Science for Transportation Committee.
His keen interest in maritime history and anthropology led him to research and publish the bibliography Cruel Seas : World War 2 Merchant Marine-Related Nautical Fiction 1939 to Present. An expert on ship china, with particular emphasis on the shipping lines of the Great Lakes, he has also published numerous articles and a book "Dining on the Inland Seas: Nautical China from the Great Lakes Region of North America".
Dan Krummes retired at the end of June 2006, so his elevation to Emeritus status has come unusually quickly. Congratulations Dan!

A long-time member of the Special Libraries Association, Rita has been particularly active in SLA's San Francisco Bay Region Chapter. Over the years she has worked on and chaired numerous Chapter committees, the Chapter's Bayline newsletter and served as the Chapter's elected President. In October 2005 Rita received the Chapter's Professional Achievement award for notable and enduring contributions to the Chapter and profession.
