VPN (Virtual Private Network)
Instructions for iPad

VPN service is available to current UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff. The client app runs on your iPad, allowing you to access journal article databases and other licensed resources as if you were using a campus computer. VPN should work with all web browsers and any version of the iPad. It is the only way to access licensed resources through the iPad's cellular (3G or 4G) connections.

Summary instructions

  1. Install the free Cisco AnyConnect app
  2. Configure the app to use the UC Berkeley VPN server.
  3. Run AnyConnect before using article databases, electronic journals, etc.
    Always choose the "Library VPN" option.
  4. Disconnect the AnyConnect VPN when your session is finished.

Detailed instructions

These instructions have been tested on first, second, and third generation iPads using Safari.

Getting the AnyConnect app

  1. On your iPad, open the App Store.
  2. Search for "anyconnect". This should find the Cisco AnyConnect app.
  3. Download and install this app (it's free of charge).

Configuring the app to use the UC Berkeley VPN server

  1. Run the AnyConnect app, tap on Add VPN Connection, and enter these settings:
        Description:   UCB
        Server Address:   ucbvpn.berkeley.edu
        Network Roaming:   ON
        Certificate:   DISABLED
  2. Tap Save to save these settings.

Using VPN

NOTE: You will need to run AnyConnect and make a VPN connection each time you want to use article databases, electronic journals, or other licensed library resources on your iPad.

  1. Have your CalNet ID and passphrase ready.
  2. In the app, turn the AnyConnect VPN switch to ON.
  3. You'll get an Authentication window. Enter as follows:
        Group:   3-Library_VPN
        Username:   Your CalNet ID
        Password:   Your CalNet passphrase
  4. Tap CONNECT.
    After a few moments, you should see the main AnyConnect screen
    with the switch at the top indicating ON.

  5. Go to your iPad's home screen and run Safari.
  6. In Safari, go to the library's homepage:
        http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/

    NOTE: At this point, you may see a "Select a Version" screen which appears automatically on mobile devices. If so, tap on Full Site.
    Sometimes this action just causes Safari to loop back to the choice page. Trying it several times may cause it to break the loop and go through. If it does nothing but loop back, try entering the URL for our Find Articles page:
        http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/find/types/articles.html
    If you use a different browser, this problem may not occur.

  7. Once you get through to a licensed resource, you should be able to search and view results normally.

Disconnecting VPN

NOTE: While the VPN app is running and connected, all your Internet traffic is routed through the UC Berkeley campus network. To reduce the load on the network, disconnect VPN when your session is finished. This will not break your Internet connection.

  1. In the AnyConnect app, turn the AnyConnect VPN switch to OFF.
  2. VPN is now disconnected and you can resume normal Internet use.

    NOTE: If your connection is idle for 30 minutes, VPN will "time out" automatically.
