VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE & LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE: Resource Guide
Vernacular architecture and landscape architecture, often called "ordinary" or "traditional" built environment, is a subject which crosses many disciplines: architecture, landscape architecture, historic preservation, building science, cultural anthropology, urban geography, archaeology, material culture, history, folklore, and human geography among them. As a result, information about vernacular architecture can be found in a variety of libraries and resources on campus.
This is a brief and selective guide to materials available in the Environmental Design Library, and includes basic research tools, historical sources, and strategies for finding materials in the UC Berkeley Libraries. The Anthropology Library, East Asian Library, Ethnic Studies Library, South/Southeast Asia Library, Center for Chinese Studies Library, and Doe and Moffitt also have relevant materials.
Only selected general materials are listed here; in fact, specific sources are generally excluded from this guide. Terms related to a particular building material (e.g. straw, adobe), a stylistic term (e.g. Shaker, Safavid), or cultural descriptor (e.g. nomads, Haida) will lead to additional worthwhile material, even when the main focus is not architecture per se, and should be searched as well.
Compiled by Claire Dannenbaum, Reference Intern, and Elizabeth Byrne.

SUBJECT HEADINGS (selected examples)
Use these selected Library of Congress subject headings as examples of subjects or keywords to find books in the Library catalogs using Pathfinder and Melvyl® to find articles in periodical indexes. There is some inconsistency in the LC subject headings, but starting with the broadest terms first, you will get a better idea of the volume of material available. Using specific terms about the type of construction material (eg. bamboo, clay) or the geographic location (eg. Iran, Philippines), and combining subject headings can help refine your search for more exact results.

Environ Dsgn CS16.M62 2000(Digital) Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps UCB Only provides maps of cities and towns of California from the 1880s to 1950s. The maps are large-scale plans containing data used originally to estimate the potential risk for urban structures, and include an outline of each building, the size, shape and construction materials, heights, and function of structures, and location of windows and doors. The maps also give street names, street and sidewalk widths, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. They are an excellent source on the history, growth, and development of American cities, towns, and neighborhoods. Earlier and later maps are available on microfilm in the Earth Sciences and Maps Library.
