Course Reserves
To Find Items that are on Reserve for Classes
Course Reserves - to find materials

Permanent reserves and course reserves are shelved behind the circulation desk. Course reserves are listed in OskiCat, the library catalog.

Once you have identified the call number of the desired material, request it in person at the circulation desk. Overdue reserve material will incur a fine. Loan periods for reserves are determined by the faculty who place them on reserve. There is a limit of 2 reserve items per borrower. The Environmental Design Library fines and bills for the replacement of overdue reserve material.

To Place Items on Reserve
Please complete the Environmental Design Library
Course Reserves Request Form.
If you prefer, you may also fax (510-642-8266) or e-mail your course reserve list to envi@library.berkeley.edu. Submit your course reserves requests to the library as early as possible to allow adequate time for processing, and be aware that some materials may need to be recalled before they can be processed and available.

Faculty interested in electronic format for course reserves may use bSpace, the UC Berkeley collaborative learning environment. For help on how to use bSpace, visit the bSpace online Training and Support Center from Educational Technology Services.

Reserve Limit: 30 items per course, please use multiple forms for more than 10 items.

Suggested Readings: Please restrict reserve requests to Required Readings Only.

Number of Copies: We recommend 1 copy of each reserve item per 25 students in the class. If there is more than one class using the same title the Library will automatically designate it 2-hour IN-Library Use Only.

Personal Copies and Photocopies: The Library will place personal copies of books and photocopies articles on reserve. (NOTE: Due to copyright restrictions and staffing shortages, the Library cannot make photocopies for you.) Please provide photocopied items on 3-hole punched paper. If the photocopied items are not bound, please provide the Library with a 3-ring binder. Unless these items are gifts to the Library, they will be returned at the close of each semester.  We call your attention to the following Library policy governing the making of photocopies:
The copyright law of the U.S. governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copy-righted material.  In accepting photocopies for reserves, the Library assumes  that the copy or copies have been made in compliance with the University of California Policy and Guidelines on the Reproduction of Copyrighted Materials for Teaching and Research (April 1986.)

See UC Policy and Guidelines on the Reproduction of Copyrighted Materials for Teaching and Research and the Association of Research Libraries' Your Copy Rights: What You Can Do.

Loan Periods: You may specify the loan period for which each item circulates - see below.
  • 2-hour Library Use Only: the material may be used for 2-hour period in the Library.
  • 2-hour Circulating: the material may be removed from the Library for 2 hours or overnight.
  • 1-Day Loan: the material may be charged out anytime for one-day.
  • NOTE: If no loan period is specified, the loan period will be 2-hours Outside Library Use. If the same item is on reserve for two classes, a narrower loan period will apply.

Additional Requests: Additional requests will be treated as new requests. They should meet the guidelines outlined above and will be processed in order of receipt. The Library cannot accept new reserve lists or requests after the mid-point of the semester.
