Image Sources for the Built Environment

Students of architecture and landscape architecture are often interested in sources that describe a building or site through measured drawings. This guide includes strategies for locating resources that provide views, plans, sections, elevations, and/or details of important buildings and sites. This is by no means a comprehensive list! For additional assistance, please consult the Environmental Design Library reference staff, 210 Wurster Hall.  Compiled by Elizabeth Byrne and Susan Koskinen
TIPS
To locate information on a particular building or landscape it is very helpful if you have the following information. You may need to consult encyclopedias of architecture or landscape architecture
 - Name of designer, architect or landscape architect
 - Name of building or site, and any alternate names or spellings
 - Date constructed
 - City, state and country where located
For picture research consult:
Picture researcher's handbook: an international guide to picture sources and how to use them, by Hilary and Mary Evans. 7th ed. London, New York: Routledge, 2001. A directory of sources for images.
