Links
To find Web sites for a specific
site or individual do a 'phrase search' using a Web search engine such
as Google, MetaCrawler, or Infoseek; e.g.,"biltmore estate" or "beatrix
farrand". Visit the gateway sites listed in the guide Landscape
Architecture online (http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/ENVI/lawww.html).
Here're a few sites that may be of interest. Also see the links throughout this guide.
Doing Research
|
Finding Books Here is a selected list of relevant catalog subject headings which may be useful in searching the online catalogs. Check also for other useful subheadings, such as Bibliographies, History, Handbooks, etc. Guidebooks to cities may also have sections on parks, recreations and public gardens, so check subject headings such as Berkeley, Calif.--Description and travel.

Journals in Landscape Architecture History This is a selection of journals with good coverage of landscape architecture history and a few primary landscape architecture journals; index coverage is indicated when known. Use the the periodical indexes listed in this guide to identify the many additional journals that cover this topic. See also The Victorian Gardener, by Anne Wilkinson (EnvDesign SB458.7 W55 2006), for an annotated list of more than 50 Victorian gardening magazines.
Finding Images This section lists sources for different types of images, including photographs, plans, drawings, and plat maps. In addition to the books and other sources already listed, landscape images and plans may be found in specialized books and on the Web. Note, too, that images can be found in unexpected places, for example, in seemingly trivial or 'popular' books, such as Beauty in gardens; a tribute, by Roger B. Whitman, published in 1928, and which consists primarily of black and white photos of the work of selected American landscape architects, including Marian Coffin, Jens Jensen, and Charles Downing Lay. The archives listed in this guide are also potentially great sources for images.
Archives, Libraries, & Historical Societies Archives, historical societies, and local libraries can be excellent sources of primary research materials in landscape architecture. To locate materials in libraries not listed in the Melvyl® catalog, use WorldCat - UC Only via OCLC/FirstSearch. Some of these materials will be available via the interlibrary borrowing service.
