Environmental Planning: Indexes & Abstracts is a selective list of periodical indexes that cover all aspects of environmental planning. Many of the listed databases also index non-journal publications, for example, proceedings, dissertations, research reports, and book chapters. For newspaper indexes and databases please see News Databases.

Please note that most of the electronic indexes listed in this guide are also listed in The Library's directory of article databases. For assistance please consult the Environmental Design Library reference staff, 210 Wurster Hall.

  2. Avery index to architectural periodicals via CSA - UCB Only  Contains citations to articles in 1,000+ periodicals in architecture, planning, urban design, and related disciplines.

Environmental sciences and pollution management databases via CSA - UCB Only || Guide Include citations and abstracts to thousands of scientific journals, conference proceedings, books, reports, and government publications. Excellent coverage for environmental planning, ecology, water resources, environmental quality, etc.

  4. Geography via SilverPlatter - UCB Only Covers the international literature in physical and human geography, including geographic information systems. Provids access to information from over 2,000 journals, monographs, books, conference proceedings reports, and theses.

GeoRef via CSA - UCB Only International coverage of geology, including groundwater pollution, landslides, creek restoration, erosion, etc. Provides citations and abstracts to 3,500+ journals and serials in 40+ languages, as well as maps, theses & dissertations, conference papers, government publications, books & book chapters, and reports.

  6. IngentaConnect - UCB Only Provides full text access to domestic & international scholarly & academic publications, in a wide range of subject areas. Note that full text articles are available only for journals for which UC Berkeley has paper subscriptions.

  7. Journal of planning literature via FirstSearch/OCLC - UCB Only Columbus, OH: Sage Publications, Inc. Indexes 400+ journals and provides comprehensive coverage of the city and regional planning literature.

  8. Lexis-Nexis academic - UCB Only  Includes indexing to over 6,000 journals, newspapers, broadcast transcripts, & wire services. Full text. Offers wide geographic coverage and translations from foreign-language sources. Good for public policy and business issues.

  9. Research library via ProQuest - UCB Only Includes abstracts and indexing to more than 1,100 periodical titles, plus current coverage of New York Times articles. Includes some full text.

  13. Urban studies & planning via CSA - UCB Only. Provides indexing to and full text of 12 journals published by SAGE Publications and participating societies, some journals going back 37 years.

Web of science - UCB Only Includes the Science Citation Index, which indexes 5,300 major journals across 164 science disciplines (coverage: 1945--) and the Social Sciences Citation Index, which indexes 1,700 journals across 50 social science disciplines, as well as individually selected items from over 3,300 leading scientific and technical journals. Also offers cited reference searching.

  1. Agricola via SilverPlatter (National Agricultural Library, et al.) - UCB Only Indexes books, journal articles, conference proceedings and reports on agriculture, and includes many aspects of landscape architecture, horticulture, and planning.

  2. Alternative press index online via FirstSearch/OCLC - UCB Only Citations are drawn from roughly 380 alternative, radical, and left publications. Useful for identifying environmental and public policy perspectives outside of the mainstream.  Most journals aren't indexed elsewhere.

  3. ASFA: aquatic sciences and fisheries abstracts database via CSA - UCB Only Indexes over 5,000 journals, books, reports, dissertations, conference proceedings, and other resources covering all aspects of marine, freshwater, and brackishwater environments.

  5. BIOSIS previews via Web of Knowledge - UCB Only || Guide (html or pdf) The on-line versions of Biological Abstracts & Biological Abstracts/RRM. Indexes 6,000 journals, as well as books & conference proceedings on a wide variety of biological topics.

  7. CAB abstracts via SilverPlatter - UCB Only Covers a broad range of agricultural topics including landscape ecology, rural development and related topics. Corresponds to the 50 printed abstract journals published by CABI and includes records from 10,000+ journals, plus books, conferences, theses, technical reports, and other sources from 100+ countries. (The material previously accessible through TREECD is now included in the CAB Abstracts Archive.) Articles in 75+ languages; most records have English language abstracts.
  8. Online coverage: 1972--.
  9. ERIC - Educational Resources Information Center via CSA - UCB Only || Educator's Reference Desk (public access) The world's largest source of education information. Includes citations with abstracts from journals, conference proceedings, curricula, and research reports in the fields of education and related social sciences. Good source for environmental education material. The majority of titles indexed are available on campus in the ERIC microfiche collection; some titles are also available in paper copy.
    Online coverage: 1966--. Microfiche: in the Education/Psychology Library.
  10. FS Info (U.S. Forest Service)  Contains records for journal articles, books, book chapters, research papers, maps, and audiovisual media on topics related to forestry, including parks and aspects of landscape architecture. The system is maintained by the U.S. Forest Service.

  12. Global health via EBSCO - UCB Only Indexes over 5,000 journals, books, reports, conference proceedings, theses, and electronic only publications. Topics include environmental and public health, and more.

  14. JSTOR - UCB Only A full text archive of interdisciplinary scholarly journal literature, including ecology and history. All journals are covered from the date of first issue; some full text articles date to the 18th century. Excellent resource.

  16. Left index via BiblioLine - UCB Only Provides access to leftist and radical media from around the world with a primary emphasis on political, economic, and social topics, including ecology & environment, social & cultural theory, art & aesthetics, globalization, etc. Includes citations & abstracts and some full text. A secondary emphasis is on significant but little known sources of news and ideas.

  18. PapersFirst via FirstSearch/OCLC - UC Only Contains 580,000+ citations for papers presented at worldwide conferences, symposia, meetings, expositions, congresses, and workshops received at The British Library. Excellent source for interdisciplinary work; the index covers disciplines in the social sciences, sciences, arts, and the humanities.

Periodicals archive online - UCB Only   An online periodical archive that provides full text access to some 450 digitized journals in the humanities and social sciences. A sister database, Periodicals Index Online, provides additional indexing for articles in over 4,500 periodicals.  International scope, including journals in a variety of Western languages.

Periodicals index online - UCB Only   Indexes over 4,500 periodicals in the humanities and social sciences, from their first issues; includes some full text access. International scope, including journals in a variety of Western languages.  A sister database, Periodicals archive online, provides a full-text archive of some 350 journals.

  24. PolicyFile - UCB Only Indexes research and publication abstracts addressing the complete range of public policy research. Access to home pages, electronic mail addresses and selected full text are made available within the individual abstracts.

  28. Treesearch: research and development (U.S. Forestry Service) Full text searchable database of publications by Research and Development scientists in the U.S. Forest Service, including research monographs, papers, conference proceedings, and books. Coverage from 1900--.
