Environmental Design Library
Internet Access & Computer Usage
Internet access is available in the Environmental Design Library through library computers.
Wireless internet access is available for current UCB students, staff and faculty in the Environmental Design Library via personal laptops.
Remote Access via Proxy Service The UC Berkeley Library Proxy Server allows authorized UC Berkeley users to gain remote access (from off campus) to electronic resources licensed by the UC Berkeley Library.
VPN (Virtual Private Network) Service   Allows you to log in with a CalNet ID to establish a secure connection with the campus network. Some programs require VPN for off-campus use: Luna Insight, MDL Crossfire Beilstein and Gmelin, SciFinder Scholar, the java client in UC Image Service, and the Connect function in EndNote. Use our instructions for Windows or Macintosh computers to download and set up your VPN software. Do not use the version of VPN that comes on the Connecting@Berkeley CDROM. Important: VPN must be turned on before you access licensed library resources. Be sure to turn off VPN when you have finished using these resources. For more information, please see our VPN FAQ.
Remote Access via Connecting@Berkeley The Connecting@Berkeley CD is another way to set up or update your Internet connection at UC Berkeley.
  • Dialing in to the UC Berkeley modems from home or when you are travelling

This will allow you to connect your laptop to any public network connection on campus, by obtaining a dynamic IP address, using DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). *Use the floor outlets in the study and lounge areas that are marked with green dots and the necessary IP addresses.
  • Use the Berkeley Internet Link: for information on Calmail, Internet Access, Laptop docking (LIPS) and links for account setup. (https://calmail.berkeley.edu:10100/)
  • Computer Use Policy, Environmental Design Library: in addition to the UCB LIbrary policy
  • Logon to the public pc's with your CalNet ID
  • Limit your search time to 20 minutes when others are waiting.
  • Limit personal email, general surfing and other non-research use.
