Using the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals & other Indexes via CSA at UC Berkeley
The Avery Index surveys 2500+ national and international scholarly, professional and popular journals covering architecture, city planning, landscape architecture, urban design, historic preservation, interior design, urban planning, history, obituaries and more. Citations date from the 1700's, comprehensive from 1930--present. Updated weekly.
CSA is a web-based search system that creates a uniform environment for databases, including Avery. For other indexes available through the Environmental Design Library - Architecture Article Databases. For more help, ask at the Environmental Design Library Reference Desk or use the CSA Website.

  • Quick Search: Enter single or multiple words (treated like a phrase) and are not case sensitive.
    Quick Search Screen
    Cross-Search databases: Select subject areas from the pull-down menu or specific databases to search, click on the 'Select Specific Databases' link.
    Date Range: select limit from the drop down menu.
    Wildcard - Use an asterisk * to find forms of a word.
    • at the end of a word - e.g.: archi* finds architecture, architectural, architect, architects.
    • in the middle of a word - e.g.: behavi*r finds behaviour or behavior.
    Advanced Search: allows you to search in MULTIPLE fields at the same time.
    Advanced Search Screen
    • Enter multiple words into one search box to search by phrase, e.g. natural ventilation
    • Enter single words in multiple boxes, select search type using the pull-down menus.
    • Boolean searchs: use the pull-down menus to select Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) & for long strategies.
    • Use AND: To broaden your search and find all words entered in the search field.
    • Use OR: To narrow your search and find any words entered in the search field
    • FIELDS - click the Add Row link at the top right of the search form to add additional rows of search boxes.
    • Alerts allows you to open your personal file to change or update your alerts.
    • Search History shows a list of your previous searchs.
    • Command Search allow you to write a search in one sentence using symbols.
    • Additional limits include Latest Update Only, Journal Articles Only, and English Only; some databases have even more limits available.

    • RESULTS: view your list of records, tools for sorting and refining results, and a Quick Search box at the page bottom that allows you to refine your existing search or begin a new search.
    Search Tools Tab: Click on this tab to -
    • Combine searches, Create Alerts, View search History, use Command searching, access the Thesaurus (not available for all indexes), and to access other indexes.
    Command Line Searching
    • for users who are familiar with the command syntax.
    Refining or Limiting Your Search Results
    • Select Limits by DATE, LANGUAGE, Country of publication, Illustration or other from a result of <10,000 records.
    • Select Refine from a result of >100 records to narrow the search add one or two search terms.
    • Select Search History to combine two or more result sets, yielding only those records in all selected sets of results.
    RESULTS use the menus at the bottom of the results page..
    • Select your preferred VIEW format: Short, Full, Full format - no references, or Custom.
    • Results per page: choose to look at 10, 25 or 50 results with the pull-down menu.
    • Search results are presented as a list of all publication types, journals, peer-reviewed journals. Peer reviewed journals have editorial boards who select the articles to be published.

    Search History & Combining Searches
    • To display a search history, click on Search History . To combine a search, click in a check box.
    Save / Print / Email Records
    • SAVE - Click the checkbox to mark any record you want to keep. You can save records from more than one result.
    • Click the save, print or email link at the top of the page. See Copyright Notice for fair use limitations.
    • PRINT or E-MAIL saved records as you would records in any other result set. You do not need to save records in order to e-mail or print them.
    Changing Databases
    • In the Basic Search screen - click on change: Subject Area or click on: Specific Databases
    FIND your article at UCB - with search results displayed, click on Availability to search Melvyl for the journal or to reach the full text of the article.  Click on "Details/Locations" to get the call number for the journal.
    Avery Results
    Bibliographic Management Software use either Refworks or Endnote.
    • Use the link located at the top of the results page..
    • Select your citations and click on the icon, Refworks will open up and download your citations into your folder.
    • OR - Open Refworks, Log in to your account. Click on 'import' - see preferences above.
    • Make sure that the correct provider is in the 'import filter/data source' box. (CSA)
    • Select the filter, make sure the correct database (Avery) is displayed, and select an import folder.
    • Under "import data from" use browse to find your saved .txt file.
    • Click on "import" you should see results under the 'view last imported' button.
    • EndNote™: E-mailed or downloaded records may be imported directly into EndNote. Some processing is required.
    • Save your citations in .txt format.
    • Choose Import from EndNote's File menu, choose "CSA Avery" filter, and select No translation.

    Community of Scholars
    • UC Berkeley currently subscribes to the Social Sciences subject area.
    • Profiles of active academic scholars and include current contact information, educational background, Website, link to CV, research interests, and verified publication lists, as available.
