John Galen Howard appointed Supervising Architect and Professor of Architecture
1903
Department of Architecture established, under the direction of John Galen Howard, University Architect. (Carried out campus plan)
Classes start in Eastman Building, Oxford and Shattuck.
Classes and Howard office move to top floor of First National Bank building (now mercantile building) on Shattuck.
School housed in the "Old Ark" at the North Gate of campus – building designed by John Galen Howard.
Atelier formed alongside office of supervising architect.

Course catalog lists 10 Upper division and 9 Grad courses; J.G. Howard listed as only faculty.

Prof. hays joins faculty
Ark constructed, 1800 sf, $4394.59, to Howard’s design
Curriculum expanded to include 4 years of watercolor, pen and ink drawing and modeling.

Report from Committee submitted to UCB Pres. Sproul recommended the creation of a new college – CED
1953
School of Architecture became the College of Architecture under William Wurster
William W. Wurster founded the Environmental Design Archives (then Architectural Archives) following the recommendation of architectural historian Henry Russell Hitchcock. The personal papers and project records of Bernard Maybeck comprised the inaugural donation.

April 13, 1959 Academic Senate on the Berkeley campus approved the establishment of the College of Environmental Design, the union of the 3 departments – Architecture, City and Regional Planning and Landscape Architecture
