1. New Resources
INSPEC on Ovid: INSPEC has joined Compendex and Current Contents on the Ovid interface. Three nice features of Ovid are phrase searching, searching all years of the database at once and searching multiple databases simultaneously. INSPEC via the California Digital Library (CDL) will retire on December 31, 2002. If you often link to IEEE conference papers you should continue to use the CDL version of INSPEC, as the Ovid interface does not yet support conference paper links. Journal article links, however, function correctly in Ovid.
Other CDL news: Current Contents via CDL and the Update feature will end on December 31, 2002. A feature similar to Update is available from OVID — see AutoAlerts below.
2. New Services
AutoAlerts: This is an Ovid feature that enables you to create a search to be run automatically in Current Contents, EI Compendex*Plus, INSPEC and other Ovid databases, and have the results e-mailed to you. To use it, you need to set up a Personal Account (equivalent to CDL's Profile), then use Ovid's Save Search function to create an AutoAlert.
UC-eLinks: Until recently, a variety of publisher buttons and URLs have provided links from article databases directly to the articles. CDL has defined a new linking service called UC-eLinks and is working with all the new vendors to use their bright yellow button to indicate what is available. UC e-Links provides links from article databases to full-text articles online, as well as to the library catalog, and to the interlibrary loan Request service. More information can be found in the CDL guide on using UC-eLinks.
3. CDL Passwords Expiring: All CDL Passwords will expire on December 31, 2002. After that date, off-campus access will only be available through the University Modem Pool and the Library Proxy Server. Consult the Connecting from Off Campus guide for information on these two methods.
