1. New Resources
SAE Digital Library: The SAE Digital Library is an index (1906 - present) to thousands of SAE technical papers, journal articles, and standards covering all areas of transportation engineering including ground vehicle, aerospace, off-highway, and manufacturing technology. It provides abstracts for papers published after 1967 and full text for papers published since 1998. Coverage includes fuels and lubricants, emissions, electronics, brakes, restraint systems, engines, materials, among other topics. The Engineering Library has the full text of SAE Papers on microfiche going back to 1984. The SAE Digital Library is listed on the Engineering Library's article databases page.
Please Note: The SAE Digital Library requires Netscape 6.1 or Internet Explorer 5.x or higher.
Compendex on Ovid: Beginning in January, our access to Compendex switched to Ovid. Compendex provides abstracts and bibliographic citations for engineering and technical literature encompassing all engineering disciplines. The records are drawn from journals, conference proceedings and technical reports. Compendex on Ovid is listed on the article databases page. Instruction in the use of Compendex on Ovid is offered on Thursday, April 17th, at 2 pm in Room 120A Bechtel. [Note: access to Compendex on Ovid has ended as of April 2005.]
Computer Manuals Online: We recently purchased a small collection of online computer manuals through netLibrary. This collection covers a wide range of practical computing topics from programming languages and web design to computer networks and security. Access has been funded as a 3-year pilot project. If successful, this small collection will be expanded in the future. [Note: access has ended as of May 2006.]
CHEMnetBASE: This compilation of chemical dictionaries and handbooks includes the Combined Chemical Dictionary, Dictionary of Commonly Cited Compounds, Handbook of Chemistry & Physics, Polymers: A Database, and Properties of Organic Compounds. CHEMnetBASE is a good resource for finding descriptive and numerical data on the chemical, physical and biological properties of chemical compounds.
Encyclopedia of Materials: This reference work covers the basic science of materials and their applications from biomedicine to musical instruments. Its 1800 articles correspond to the print version (Call # TA402.E53 2001 Reference), but here are searchable by keyword, author and cited author; and available for viewing in HTML or PDF files.
Comprehensive Composite Materials: This reference covers naturally occurring and synthetic composite materials, including their history, mechanical and physical properties, structural design and analysis, manufacturing processes, applications, recycling and disposal. It's searchable by keyword, author and subject index term, and its articles can be viewed as HTML or PDF files. The print version is at call number TA418.9.C6.C6344 2000 Reference.
SciFinder backfile and New Client Software: You can now search the Chemical Abstracts part of SciFinder Scholar by author and research topic all the way back to 1907, CA's first year of publication. The full indexing and the addition of CAS Registry Numbers and molecular formulas have not been added for these records, however, they will be retrieved on keyword and author searches. CAS plans to add these features to these older records in the future.
SciFinder® Scholar 2001, released this Fall by CAS, is available for downloading from UCLA's Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry website. UC students, faculty, and staff need to install the SciFinder Scholar 2001 client (MS Windows or Apple Macintosh) or upgrade existing SciFinder Scholar 3.0 or 2000 clients. CAS will discontinue supporting SciFinder Scholar 3.0 on March 31, 2002.
2. New Services
Document Delivery Form Online: Are you in a hurry to get a journal article or conference paper not available at UCB? We offer an expedited document delivery service that can fill most requests in 1-3 business days on average. In the past, you might have visited our Reference Desk to request this service. Now you can use our new online Expedited Article and Paper Request Form. This special service is for College of Engineering faculty, graduate students and research staff only.
Exams Online: To support Berkeley undergraduates, the Library is undertaking a project to make copies of midterm and final exams available via a web page called EXAMS. If you would like the full text of your exams to appear on this page, please call Esther Gold at (510) 643-8111 or send her an e-mail at "egold" at "library.berkeley.edu."
3. Responsible Use of Licensed Resources
This is a reminder that most of the electronic resources available to faculty and students — such as electronic journals, article databases, and reference works — are governed by license agreements between the university and the publisher. In addition to being limited to UCB (or UC) faculty, students, and staff or onsite users of the UCB libraries, these resources usually carry other restrictions as well. It is the responsibility of individual users to ensure that these resources are used for personal, non-commercial, research or educational purposes. While specific restrictions vary from resource to resource, certain actions are always prohibited, such as systematic or programmatic downloading, copying, and distribution. More information can be found on the Conditions of Use page. Additionally, most electronic journals will have a link to their specific terms of use on their web page.
What happens if the license if violated? Publishers track the use of their electronic resources and will notify the University of the details of any apparent violations and expect us to take action. If efforts are not made to cease the misuse, they have a right to suspend access to the resource in question and any other journals produced by that same publisher — they will suspend access not just for the individual violator but for the entire campus community. Thus, irresponsible use by an individual can have serious ramifications for the entire campus.
4. Library Instruction
The three remaining instruction seminars this semester will all be held in Room 120, Bechtel at 2 p.m., and the topics are as follows:
Web of Science: Tuesday, April 2
Compendex (new version): Wednesday, April 17
Endnote: Thursday, April 25
