The Circulation desk is staffed whenever the Library is open to provide borrowing and reserve services, and assistance with using the collections and resolving problems. The Library is open to all. Check the Engineering Library section of the hours calendar for today's hours.

The Kresge Engineering Library is an open-stack library, and users are welcome to browse in the stacks. Material is shelved by Library of Congress call number, a subject-based system.

Bound journals and books are arranged by call number in the stacks. Unbound journals are shelved by call number on display shelves on the lower level (northeast center and side) of the library (Library Floor Plan, PDF).

UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and students use their current Cal ID card as their library card. Others who wish to borrow materials may purchase a library card at the Privileges Desk in Doe Library.

Loan periods vary depending on the type of material:

You may not renew items that are:

Unbound journals and course reserves are non-renewable.

Renewal Limits:

Once the renewal limit has been reached, you must return the item to the library to have it cleared from your Library account. For continued use, you may re-check out the item, restarting the renewal cycle.

When to renew:

Items may be renewed no sooner than:

Please return materials to any circulation desk by the due date to avoid overdue penalties. Reserve, non-book (e.g. media, maps and music scores) or damaged material must be returned to the library from which it was borrowed. Refer to the lending library for information on returning other non-book materials. Return interlibrary loan material to 133 Doe. Renew items that you need to keep longer.

An after hours book return is located near the entrance to the courtyard outside the Engineering Library. Use this to return library materials when the library is closed.

Return Receipts may be requested from a circulation desk for returned material. Materials damaged or incomplete should be brought immediately to the owning library circulation desk to discuss repair or replacement options that may be available. The Library does not keep a record of receipts issued.

Course Reserve materials are held behind the Circulation desk. Take the call number for the item you need and ask for it there.

Hold pickup, recalls, and overdue notices are sent automatically via email. Please keep your e-mail address current by logging into MyOskiCat.

Recalls and Searches

If a book you need is checked out by another user, place a request for it in OskiCat using the Request button. The other user will be asked to return the book within a few days. The book will be held for you at the circulation desk and you will be notified by e-mail that it's ready for pick up.

If an item you need is not on the shelf, ask the circulation staff to put a search on it. The staff will notify you of the results of the search and hold the item, if found, for you to pick up.

The library has BookScan stations attached to printers and microform readers/printers. They operate with Cal 1 Cards or Cal 1 guest cards. Cards may also be used to print from public computers in the library. See Library Photocopy Services for detailed information.
