Circulation Services

The Circulation desk is staffed whenever the Library is open to provide borrowing and reserve services, and assistance with using the collections and resolving problems. The Library is open to all. Check the Engineering Library section of the hours calendar for today's hours.

The Kresge Engineering Library is an open-stack library, and users are welcome to browse in the stacks. Material is shelved by Library of Congress call number, a subject-based system.

Bound journals and books are arranged by call number in the stacks. Unbound journals are shelved by call number on display shelves on the lower level (northeast center and side) of the library (Library Floor Plan, PDF).

Borrowing

UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and students use their current Cal ID card as their library card. Others who wish to borrow materials may purchase a library card at the Privileges Desk in Doe Library.

Loan periods vary depending on the type of material, as indicated in the table below:

Type of Material Loan Period
Books 1 month
Bound Journals 1 day
Unbound Journals 2 hours (not overnight)
Course Reserves 2 hours (overnight allowed) or 1 day
Permanent Reserves 7 days
Reference Materials Building use only

Please return materials to the same library from which you borrowed them by the due date to avoid overdue penalties. Renew items that you need to keep longer.

An after hours book return is located on the right wall just before the entrance to the courtyard outside the Engineering Library. Use this to return library materials when the library is closed.

Course Reserve materials are held behind the Circulation desk. Take the call number for the item you need and ask for it there.

Hold pickup, recalls, and overdue notices are sent automatically via email. Please keep your e-mail address current by using the UCB Library Patron File Information Update form.

Recalls and Searches

If a book you need is checked out by another user, ask the circulation staff to recall if for you. The other user will be asked to return the book within a few days. The book will be held for you at the circulation desk and you will be notified by e-mail that it's ready for pick up.

If an item you need is not on the shelf, ask the circulation staff to put a search on it. The staff will notify you of the results of the search and hold the item, if found, for you to pick up.

Photocopiers

The library has several copy machines and microform readers/printers. They operate with coins or with copy cards. Copy cards may also be used to print from microform readers and public computers in the library. See Library Photocopy Services for detailed information.
