- The PsycInfo database, produced by the American Psychological
Association, is available through the CSA Illumina interface at the
University of California, Berkeley, along with PsycArticles and
Psychology: Sage Full-Text.
- These three databases provide an index to scholarly journal articles,
dissertations, books and other documents in the field of psychology.

- PsycInfo indexes over 8 million cited references in over 185,000
journals in 30 languages (including both peer-reviewed and
non-peer-reviewed), books and chapters.
- Dates of coverage include 1806 to the present, with approximately 60,000
new records added yearly. Over
2,167,174 records had been added as of October 2005.

- To find books on psychology, also search Pathfinder (the UCB catalog) or
Melvyl (the UC-all campuses catalog).
- To find dissertations, use Digital Dissertations.

- To view more information about any of the databases indexed, click the
“?” beside the name of the database listed below the search screen.

- Multiple databases can be searched at once via the CSA Illumina
interface.
- While PsycInfo, PsycArticles and Psychology: Sage Full-Text are the
primary databases for psychological literature, relevant citations may
also be found via Sociological Abstracts, Communication Abstracts, ERIC
and the other databases listed.

- Note that UC Berkeley subscribes to more social science databases than
are available via CSA. Click Social
Science Databases on the EDP
Library website or the A-Z List of all UCB article databases.

- CSA can search over 75 fields to find terms entered. Some fields are specific to certain
databases. Click the drop-down
arrow in the field box for a complete list.
- The initial search screen defaults to Keywords, Title, Anywhere. Be sure to change the defaults to
match terms entered.

- Primary fields for psychology include:
- Keyword
- Title
- Author
- Descriptors (i.e., APA’s indexing terms)
- Source (i.e., journal title)
- Tests and Measurements
- References
- The Tests and Measurements field can be used to find citations to
literature that refer to a specific psychological test or scale.

- To find empirical studies based on a scale, questionnaire, test or other
measurement tool, use the Tests and Measurements field to target the
search.
- Add the name of a specific scale, or simply enter the words “scale”,
“test”, or “questionnaire” to find a study using such an instrument.

- Enter your search terms, i.e., keywords, descriptors (APA subject
headings), title words, author, publication name, or name of test or
scale.

- Use the “and, or, not” Boolean connectors to expand or target your
search.

- Use “or” to broaden your search.
- Use “not” to exclude terms.

- Consult the APA Thesaurus to find additional search terms and APA’s
descriptors.
- Print editions of the Thesaurus are located in the reference area of the
Library (Call Number BF43.T45).
- An online version of the Thesaurus can be found under the Search Tools

- Be sure to select the APA PsycInfo Thesaurus.

- The Thesaurus will display broader, narrower and/or related terms if you
click the “Hierarchy” button.

- UC-eLinks will direct you to the online full-text article, if it is

- Melvyl will take you to the UC all-campuses catalog.

- Check the Library field to see if UCB has the title you need.

- Click Details/Locations to find the title at UCB.
- Note you will find both links to online full-text and the Call Numbers
for print editions in any of the UCB libraries that collects the title.

- On the search results page, select citations by clicking the boxes next to their record

- Refworks allows you to quickly format citations in APA style both in a
Bibliography and within a Manuscript.

- Refworks is available free via all UCB terminals and via off-campus

- Other citation management software programs, such as Endnote, may also
be used to organize citations.

- Open Refworks from the Web at www.refworks.com/Refworks.

- Click on the “Export to Refworks” button on the bottom of the Save,
Print, Email screen, or
- Click on “Refworks” directly from the search results page.

- You will be asked to set up a free account the first time you use
Refworks.
- You can then create folders of citations within your own Refworks
citation database.
- Export citations from CSA, from other UCB databases, and from the Web.
