  • National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition & Language Instruction Education Programs.  Formerly, the National Clearinghouse for Bilingual Education, the NCELA&LIE provides papers and information on bilingual education on its website. 
  • CAELA.  Center for Adult English Language Acquisition.  Contains information and publications in the area of English as a Second Language Literacy, plus links to other ESL sources.
  • National Research CouncilPreventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children. March 1998 Report which calls for ensuring that all children are equipped with the skills and instruction they need to learn to read. The report is no longer online, but may be obtainable from NRC.

  • Absence Unexcused: Ending Teacher Shortages in High-Need Areas. (2002)  Urban Institute study of the Pathways to Teaching Careers teaching preparation programs. 
  • Boyer Commission.  Reinventing Undergraduate Education.
  • Bush Education Initiative: "No Child Left Behind".  This documents outlines President's Bush's education policy recommendations to Congress.  His goals include testing to assess student performance and the success of individual schools, decreasing regulatory involvement in school policymaking, improving teacher quality, increasing literacy, and providing choices for parents whose children are in failing schools.
  • The Condition of Education 2000-2006 2004; 2003.  This annual NCES report presents trends and developments in American education.  Themes include children's reading achievement, participation and persistence in education, student performance, environment for learning, and societal support for education. 
  • The Condition of Education 2002.  This annual NCES report contains 44 indicators in six areas: enrollment trends and student characteristics; student achievement;  student effort and progress among different populations; quality of elementary and secondary education; context of post-secondary education; and societal support for learning.  Also information on the environment, climate, enrollment, private school outcomes, and nontraditional undergraduates.
  • Government Resources. California, national, federal and local documents relating to education.
  • Office of Educational Research and Improvement.  Archive of U.S. Department of Education research papers on a variety of topics including the arts, charter schools, safety, reform, bi-lingual education, at-risk students, financing, disabled students, class size, early childhood development, etc.
  • The Importance of Leadership: The Role of School Principals.  This report, by IBM Endowment for the Business of Government, examines common leadership traits of principals.  Visit the Endowment, then click on "Publications." Enter "leadership" in the title field to search.
  • The Nation's Report Card: Fourth Grade Reading 2000.  Released April 2, 2001, this report assesses the reading skills of fourth-graders nationally and finds that the gap between the highest and lowest performing students has widened over the past eight years; girls continue to outperform boys in reading; and student average reading scores hae remained stable since 1992.
  • The Principal, Keystone of a High-Achieving School:  Attracting and Keeping the Leaders We Need.  This Educational Research Service report examines the national principal shortage and the methods to address the situation.  Available for ordering from EDS and 800-791-9308.
  • Quality Counts 2002: Building Blocks to Success.  The 2002 Report focuses on importance of high quality learning during he pre-k-12 school years. Provides statistics and interactive data searching.

  • Department of Education's Standards Resources. An Archive.
  • Developing Educational Standards A resource website maintained by Charles Hill and the Putnam Valley Central schools in NewYork.  The site links to K-12 standards by state and by subject area, to U.S. and foreign resources, and to labs, clearinghouses and organizations concerned with educational standards.
  • Goals 2000: Reforming Education to Improve Student Achievement.  April 30, 1998. An Archive.
  • Practical Assessment, Research & Evaluation.  A peer-reviewed online journal.
  • McREL. Search for subject specific standards or browse a wide range.  Includes background and information on development standards.

Textbooks and Syllabi
The EDP Library at UCB does not maintain a collection of textbooks currently used in California schools.  Learning Resources Display Centers are maintained by several County Offices of Education so that teachers may do preliminary screening of material for selection of instructional materials.  The following counties maintain LRDCs: Butte, Contra Costa, Fresno, Humboldt, Kern, Los Angeles (Central), Los Angeles (Southern), Merced, Monterey, Orange, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Luis Opispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Tulare, Ventura.  See Learning Resource Display Centers
