Maps of Nicaragua 1965-1987: a Cartobibliography

Introduction

This cartobibliography includes separately published general and thematic maps of Nicaragua as well as its regions, political subdivisions and cities. It also contains citations to map sheets from two world (and several regional) sets that include coverage of Nicaragua. Not included are atlases, aerial photographs and other remotely sensed images, and maps published in books and journals.

The time period covered is 1965-1987. Nicaraguan maps published prior to 1965 appear to be well represented in the American Geographical Society's Catalogue of Maps of Latin America and Palmyra Monteiro's A Catalogue of Latin American Flat Maps, 1926-1964. The year 1987 was chosen as an ending date in an attempt to make the listing as complete as possible. Because there is frequently a delay between the publication of a map and it's appearance in library catalogs or other sources, it is hoped that a three-year wait will have solved this problem. Every attempt was made to provide the most complete description for each map. This was usually possible -- from information obtained from library catalogs or the maps themselves. Occasionally, however, only a brief citation to a particular map was available; such titles were included in order to make the list as comprehensive as possible. In any work of this sort, however, it is inevitable that additional titles will be discovered. The compiler would greatly appreciate notification of any such omissions.

For each title, the information provided includes, whenever possible, author (i.e., cartographer or mapmaker), title, scale, (coordinates if available), place, publisher and date, number of sheets, presence of color or other characteristics, size, series name, descriptive notes, owning library, and the Library of Congress call number (if available). The number of libraries holding each title has been limited, with reference to additional holdings in the international databases OCLC and RLIN. When the information could be obtained, a list of sheets within sets is provided. For sets or series only sheets published between 1965 and 1987 are included. The titles have been grouped into broad subject categories. Each title is listed only once in the bibliography, with references to it. For cross references to other subject headings not utilized in the bibliography you may consult the table that follows.

As a matter of reference, the Direccion General de Cartografia became the Instituto Geografico Nacional sometime after May 1970 but before March 1971. U.S. Department of State memorandum JHM-Nicaragua-L-3-72 stated that "This report is the result of a map and publications procurement mission October 5-17, 1972 to Nicaragua. The main map producing agency in Nicaragua is the Instituto Geographico Nacional which was reported in DRD-L-3-71 (4/9/71) and updated in JHM-L-2-72 (11/21/72)." DRD-L-3-71 was not available for consultation.

This work is an extension of a Nicaraguan map cataloging project completed in 1989 for the University of California at Berkeley's School of Library and Information Studies and the University Library's Map Room.
