FINLAND 500 Years on the Map of Europe

Sorry. You missed the Exhibit. December 19th was the last day. However, an online version is available from FINFO the Finnish information server.

Thirty large sized reproductions, mainly from the privately owned Fredrikson Map Collection were on display. The Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs commissioned the Museum of Central Finland in Jyväskylä to assemble the exhibit in March 1993.

Finland 500 Years on the Map of Europe shows how the country developed from a sparsely inhabited and remote Swedish province into a developed European state, during a period lasting half a millenium.

The arrival of the exhibit coincided with the official establishnment of a permanent Finnish Studies Program at UC Berkeley.

The Center for Western European Studies, in collaboration with the Finnish Consulate of Los Angeles and San Francisco and the Finnish Ministry of Education announced the establishment of the Finnish Studies Program during the official inauguration, which took place October 9th in Chancellor's Tien's office. Among distinguished guests present were Ambassador Jukka Valtasaari, Finnish Ambassador to the U.S., and Prof. Derek Shearer, U.S. Ambassador to Finland.
