Borrowing and Renewing
Circulation
All UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and students have borrowing privileges using
their UC Berkeley picture ID. The IDs of enrolled students are automatically
activated in the Library system. Faculty and staff may need to visit the Main Library's Privileges Desk before checking out EAL materials. Stanford graduate students and faculty
have also recently been added to the UC Berkeley Library circulation system.
Faculty, stsff and students from other UC campuses can obtain a UC Berkeley
library card by presenting a current employee ID card or student ID at the Privileges Desk .

Renewals
Materials can be renewed at the Circulation Desk by simply presenting the call numbers of the items to be renewed. Call numbers of items to be renewed may also be submitted by email, to eal@library.berkeley.edu. EAL cannot renew items over the telephone. For online renewals, use GLADIS (instructions below and at the UC Berkeley Library website). Some materials, especially NRLF items, cannot be renewed online. Ask at the Circulation Desk about renewing limited-use materials.
To renew an item through GLADIS:
- Open GLADIS through a telnet connection or at any library workstation.
- Type "inv" and press Enter.
- Type in your patron ID number (the barcode number on your library or student ID card) and press Enter.
- At the prompt, type in your four-digit PIN (the month and date of your birthday; e.g., "0401" for April 1) and press Enter. An inventory of all the items charged to you will appear.
- To renew an item in the list, type "ren" followed by a space followed by the list number of the item you wish to renew (e.g., "ren 1") and press Enter. The screen will indicate whether the item has been successfully renewed and what the new due date is.
- Make a note of the new due date and clear the screen by typing "f" and press Enter.
