Information for users
of telnet Melvyl

On August 31, 2007, the command-line telnet version of the Melvyl catalog was retired from service. After this change, only the web version is available.

The California Digital Library took this action, with input from the UC campus libraries, because:

  • Melvyl was being moved to a new computer platform that does not support telnet.
  • The telnet version was limited to basic searching, displaying, and mailing of records, and is little used.
  • The web version offers more search options, individual profiles, saving of searches, updates, request, links to full text of some items.
  • The web version's Command Search mode lets you perform complex searches using a single command line.
