CSEIL: Center for Science and Engineering Information Literacy

Ten things to know for new science and engineering graduate students

  1. Where are the Science and Engineering Libraries?

  2. Who is my Subject Specialist contact?

  3. What are the major article indexes in my field?

  4. What journals are available electronically?
To quickly browse or search for science and engineering electronic journals, use the Electronic Journals database. To search more comprehensively, use the Melvyl Catalog.

  5. Where is the catalog to find call numbers and locations of books and journals?
  6. What books do I have checked out and how can I renew them?
See the Online Inventory and Renewal section in the Guide to GLADIS (PDF).

  7. How can I keep up with new articles published in my field?
    • use CSA Alerts
      Guide: HTML | PDF
    • use alerts from Web of Knowledge/Web of Science:
      Guide: HTML | PDF

  8. How do I access these resources from off-campus computers?
Use the Proxy Server, or the VPN (Virtual Private Network) service.

  9. How do I get materials that are not owned at Berkeley?
Use Interlibrary Loan services. Check with your Subject Specialist contact to learn about Interlibrary Loan services at your Library.

  10. How do I keep track of my citations?
Bibliographic management software allows you to store and manage all your citations, insert them into papers and generate lists of references easily. If you have EndNote, consult Tutorials and Guides and check the Instruction Schedule for a class. Use RefWorks for more short term management of your references.
