You now have access to all material in C&E News Online even if you are not an ACS member.  ACS is offering CDL a trial institutional subscription in order to study the effects of institutional access on its membership journal.  ACS members already have access to all articles through the ACS membership number.  If you are not an ACS member and would still like to view journal articles that are restricted, then you must register at the journal site.  You will see this option once you click on a restricted access article.  During the registration process you will assign yourself a username and password that are good for the length of the study, a year or two. You need only register once.  Remember that you designate your own username and password during the registration process. (http://pubs.acs.org/cen/index.html)

CrossFire Upgrade 
The upgrade to Beilstein Commander 4.0 is now available.  It is called Commander 2000 and you can download it from the UW-Madison Libraries Beilstein Client Distribution Page.   If you are already using version 4.0, you don’t have to upgrade at this time, but you may want to.  Commander 2000 comes with AutoNom (standard version), user-friendly fact query forms to help you look for textual data, an option for no isomers when doing structure searching, and the communication is better between ISIS Draw and Beilstein Commander.  AutoNom Standard, which is installed automatically during the setup procedure, is a fully functional AutoNom version with no limitations.  However, it does not include stereochemisry , display of locants or CAS ring names.   Commander 2000 also installs a demonstration program called Datalink, a program that resides in the computer’s memory.  If you are in any application and select text, you can then call up Datalink with a mouse click, which will launch Beilstein Commander and search the selected text.  You can turn it off if you don’t want it once it is installed.  You may hear about or read some documentation about LitLink, which would enable users to link directly to the full text of the cited article.  We do not have LitLink.

CrossFire Free Roadshow and Dinner in Oakland October 30 
MDL is hosting roadshows throughout the world to demonstrate the new features that they have implemented in CrossFire Commander 2000.  The one closest to us is in Oakland on October 30th at the Waterfront Plaza Hotel.  The program begins with registration at 3:00 PM and continues with dinner at 6:00 PM.  Attendance at the presentation is free of charge. Registration for these presentations is required as space is limited.  If you are interested, please schedule the respective date and register as soon as possible by using the online registration form.
