Off-campus Access
Students, staff and faculty have several options for accessing most of the web-based materials licensed by the Library while using off-campus computers. These methods should provide 24/7 access from computers located anywhere around the world.
- The Library Proxy Server can be used by all currently enrolled students, staff, and faculty--regardless of major or department. This method is preferred because it works with most of our web-based electronic resources. The Proxy Server's main drawback, however, is that it normally will not work if the off-campus computer is operating behind a firewall.
- Students and faculty within the Haas School of Business may also use the Terminal Server method provided by the Haas Computing Services. While it will work on machines with firewalls, it may not work with all of the Long Library's web-based electronic materials.
- VPN (Virtual Private Network) Service lets you log in with a CalNet ID to establish a secure connection with the campus network. Use these instructions to download and set up your VPN software. Do not use the version of VPN that comes on the Connecting@Berkeley CDROM. Important: VPN must be turned on before you access licensed library resources. Be sure to turn off VPN when you have finished using these resources. For more information, please see VPN FAQ.
- Using the Dial up services provided by the U.C. Berkeley's Communications and Network Services allows students, staff, and faculty to use campus modems to connect to the Internet and to access most of the web-based databases listed on the electronic resources page of the Long Library. This method is a fee service and, while allowing off-campus access, will involve long distance telephone charges if used outside of the local calling area.
