RefWorks: Importing Search Results from
ISI Web of Knowledge Databases
Printer-friendly version
In ISI Web of Knowledge databases (Web of Science, BIOSIS, CAB Abstracts, Zoological Record), results of a search can be imported into RefWorks. Web of Science is shown in this example, but these instructions apply to any database on the ISI Web of Knowledge platform.
- On the Search Results screen, select the citation(s)
you want to import into RefWorks by clicking in the checkboxes to the left of
the appropriate citations. Then click
.
- Click the Marked List link near the top of the Search Results page. You will be taken to the "View/Manage Marked Lists" screen. Click
. This will take you to the Output Options screen:

-
On the Output Options page, leave the bold
fields checked. Make sure the ISSN box is checked; this enables
to work from within your RefWorks account. Check the Abstract field if you want to include article abstracts in your
RefWorks database.
- Under "Step 2: Select an option," make sure the second pull-down menu is set to "Field Tagged" (the default option.) Then click "Save to File".
- On the Library public computers,
you will need to save the file to your own USB drive (F:) or floppy disk (A:) since it is not possible to save to the desktop.
- Note: Do not click
-- this works with EndNote but not with RefWorks.
- Now open http://www.refworks.com in a new browser window or tab. Click on User
Login.
- Log in to your RefWorks account with your username and password. (If you
are a new user, you may sign up for your individual account from a link on
this page).
- Once you have successfully opened your account, select "References > Import"
to open the RefWorks Import Form.

- Select the ISI (Institute for Scientific Information) filter in the first
pulldown menu (Import Filter/Data Source). Select the correct database (Web of Science, BIOSIS, CAB Abstracts, Zoological Record).
Then click the Browse button on the right.
- Choose the .txt file you saved, then click Open. (If you are on your own computer, the .txt file will probably have been saved to your desktop. Library public computers
default to A:) You may also need to pull down the "Files of Type:" menu
to show All Files or .txt files.
- At the bottom of the form, click the Import button.
- After a few seconds, you will see a message ("Importing references,
please wait..."). A series of asterisks will appear one by one.
After they stop appearing, RefWorks will tell you how many records were imported.
- Click "View last imported folder" to see your imported citations.
