Printing and Copying in ebrary

ebrary is a collection of nearly 40,000 ebooks in a wide range of subject areas. Access is available from all campus computers. UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and students can also access this resource from off campus via the Library Proxy Server or VPN (Virtual Private Network).

Ebrary's default screen, called Quick View, allows instant viewing of documents in your browser. To print, copy, or use other advanced features you can use the InfoTools menu from Quick View, or launch the ebrary Reader (recommended). Printing from the ebrary Reader will result in better print quality.

Two readers are available: the Plug-in Reader (Windows, Mac) and the Unity Reader (Windows, Linux; includes text-to-speech functionality) . The plug-in reader has been installed on all public computers in the library. Simply click the ebrary Reader button to launch (see screenshot below).

If you do not already have the ebrary Reader software installed on your computer, clicking on the ebrary Reader button from Quick View will prompt you to begin the installation process.

Printing

Click on the Print icon in the ebrary reader to print, or from Quick View, choose InfoTools, then choose Print . Do not use your browser's print icon!

Note: Publishers' restrictions prevent any ebrary books from being printed in full. You will only be able to print a portion of the book per session, and only a limited number of pages can be printed at a time (usually 10). Restrictions vary by publisher.

Copying and pasting

You can select text and copy it to another application. The paste operation adds a bibliographic citation of the source material with a link to the page in the document where the information was obtained.

Note: A maximum of one page of text can be copied at once. Images cannot be copied.

Saving

Ebrary's terms of service do not permit downloading or saving entire books, or portions of books. See Copying and Pasting for information on how to copy pages from ebrary (limited to one page at a time).

Exporting to EndNote® and RefWorks®

You can export citation information for ebrary books to either EndNote or RefWorks.

Highlighting, Notes, and InfoTools™

You can click on the InfoTools menu or on the Highlight icon ebrary highlight icon to highlight text (sign-in required). Creating an ebrary account is free, and allows you to create your own bookshelf and save your notes and highlighting.

To make notes on a page, choose the Notes tab on the left-hand menu of the ebrary Reader (top left corner).

The InfoTools menu contains tools that assist you in your search. Most of these resources will load in your browser window; your ebrary Reader window remains open and active while you conduct your research. You can highlight a word or phrase within the ebrary document and get a definition (from merriam-webster.com), an explanation (from britannica.com), a translation (from babelfish.yahoo.com), and more. You can also get biographical information by highlighting a person's name or geographic information by highlighting a place name.
