Basic Search Techniques

Author Searching

There are three ways to search for authors:
  1. Search in the author (AUI) field. Author names are hyphenated with the last name first. Enter the last name, followed by a hyphen, and the first initial, followed by an asterisk (*) in the AUI field. e.g. Sposito-G* in AUI.
  2. Use the Author option in the pull-down menu.
  3. Select the Browsable Author Index (AUI) under the Index tab, enter the last name followed by a hyphen and first initial in the Term box and click Go To Term. Select the check box next to each item and click Search Marked.

Keyword Searching

Using the default Anywhere option in the pull-down menu, you can search for keywords and phrases anywhere within records. Note: words entered as a phrase will retrieve records with them adjacent in any order, e.g. sediment monitoring retrieves sediment monitoring and monitoring sediment. Note: This is a British database, so your search must include British spellings, e.g. flavour OR flavor. See http://www.askoxford.com/betterwriting/us/?view=uk for a list of common differences between American and British spellings.

Search Operators

AND Both terms must be in the record: parasitoids AND pears
OR Either or both terms must be in the record: renewable OR sustainable
NOT The first term but not the second: tubers NOT potatoes
ADJ Terms must be next to each other, in order: field ADJ corn
WITH Both must be in the same field: hormones WITH ethylene
NEAR Both terms must be in the same sentence: germination NEAR storage
NEARn Both terms within n words of each other: nitrogen NEAR2 management

Truncation

* unlimited truncation: till* retrieves tilled, tilling, tillage
? 0 or 1 character per “?”: labo?r retrieves labor, labour
ripe??? retrieves ripe, ripen, ripened

Searching within fields from the Search Tab

IN Specify IN which field to search: riparian IN TI, OT (TI, OT = title)
brownfields IN AB (AB = abstract)
ecology IN SO (SO = journal, book, etc.)
1972 IN PY, or 1975-1979 IN PY (PY = year published)

To see the full range of limiting options, click the periwinkle Change button to the right of the search box. All limits you apply will appear and persist for all new searches until you click the periwinkle Clear button.

Advanced Search

Create a complex search strategy using three search boxes joined by AND, OR and NOT.

Thesaurus

Enter a term and see the controlled vocabulary entries for that term. You may click a term for broader and narrower terms, select all possibilities, and click the Search Marked button. The Explode Marked button will search for the selected term and all narrower terms.

Index

Several browsable indexes are available to all databases hosted through WebSPIRS, including authors, publication year, and Source (journal name, book title, etc.). The default General Index contains a mix of subject headings, source and keywords. Each index shows the number of records in the combined set of databases for each term. You can combine terms in any index by making multiple selections and clicking the Search Marked button (upper right side).

Search History / Create SDI

The Search History tab shows you all your searches with the numbers of results and allows you to combine them using AND or OR. You may also save your searches to re-run later, or Create SDI, which sends you an e-mail of new records matching your search when added to CAB Abstracts.

Getting Help

At the top of each screen is a link to Help, and a Database Guide. You may also ask us questions in person at the Bioscience Library Reference Desk, 2101 VLSB.
