Basic Search Techniques
Author SearchingThere are three ways to search for authors:
Keyword SearchingUsing the default Anywhere option in the pull-down menu, you can search for keywords and phrases anywhere within records. Note: words entered as a phrase will retrieve records with them adjacent in any order, e.g. sediment monitoring retrieves sediment monitoring and monitoring sediment. Note: This is a British database, so your search must include British spellings, e.g. flavour OR flavor. See http://www.askoxford.com/betterwriting/us/?view=uk for a list of common differences between American and British spellings.Search Operators

Create a complex search strategy using three search boxes joined by AND, OR and NOT.

Enter a term and see the controlled vocabulary entries for that term. You may click a term for broader and narrower terms, select all possibilities, and click the Search Marked button. The Explode Marked button will search for the selected term and all narrower terms.
Several browsable indexes are available to all databases hosted through WebSPIRS, including authors, publication year, and Source (journal name, book title, etc.). The default General Index contains a mix of subject headings, source and keywords. Each index shows the number of records in the combined set of databases for each term. You can combine terms in any index by making multiple selections and clicking the Search Marked button (upper right side).
The Search History tab shows you all your searches with the numbers of results and allows you to combine them using AND or OR. You may also save your searches to re-run later, or Create SDI, which sends you an e-mail of new records matching your search when added to CAB Abstracts.
At the top of each screen is a link to Help, and a Database Guide. You may also ask us questions in person at the Bioscience Library Reference Desk, 2101 VLSB.
