Our Rising Stars: Jeanne Fong, Cris Campbell, Cameron Olen, Rebecca Green, Barclay Ogden, Margaret McCormick

And the winner is....The Library!!

This year's lucky MSAP/PSAP participants were announced this week, and the Library was a hand's down winner. Congratulations to our three winners: Jeanne Fong, Cris Campbell and Cameron Olen. All of our nominated employees placed in the winner's circle.

MSAP (Management Skill Academy Program) and PSAP (Professional Skills Academy Program) are widely regarded as a must for employees with outstanding potential for growth and development. The two programs are sponsored by Office of the President, University of California, to select outstanding employees with managerial talent and potential to participate in a week's program with other outstanding talents from the northern California campuses.

The selection process is rigorous and highly competitive by campus committee. This year, from the Berkeley campus, twenty-five applicants competed for nine open spots for MSAP. For PSAP, twenty applicants competed for eight slots.

Our lucky winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Vallombrosa, a convent, in Menlo Park, while they work night and day with mentors who will provide feedback on their managerial attributes.

Jeanne Fong is an MSAP selectee, with Cris Campbell having been chosen as first alternate for both Berkeley and Santa Cruz' campuses among four alternates. This guarantees her a slot in next year's program and allows her early admission for this year if anyone from her two designate campuses cannot fulfill the requirements to attend. Cam Olen was the Library candidate for PSAP and has been chosen as a first round participant.

In other developing Library leadership stories, three Library managers, Rebecca Green, Barclay Ogden, and Margaret McCormick, have been enrolled in the campus' new Leadership Academy, which is a new on-site eighteen month program that began last month.

Ellie Schindelman, chair of selection committees for these programs, congratulated the Library on its fine applicants and high success rate, commenting on the strong applications and the campus' commitment to helping the Library in our time of change.

Congratulations to Jeanne, Cris and Cam, and their managers, Katie Frohmberg and Barclay Ogden, who strongly supported them and committed to fulfill all the necessary managerial tasks required for applicant admissions.

We hope we will hear further from these participants in future CU News articles regarding their experiences in these programs.

President's Science/Engineering Award Goes to Lib/Info Science Professor at UCLA

The Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers this year has gone to UCLA Assistant Professor Gregory H. Leazer of the Department of Library and Information Science at UCLA's Graduate School of Education & Information Studies. The award was created in 1996 by President Clinton to acknowledge the work of outstanding scientists and engineers in the early stages of their research careers. The award is a first in the field of library and information sciences. Leazer was one of sixty researchers from across the country to receive the award.

The National Science Foundation nominated Leazer in recognition of work on information retrieval in digital libraries. He looks forward to using his award to further his research in intelligent search agents. He will focus on how people use technology and then apply that knowledge to the design of search agents that more closely approximate human behavior. For more information, see the UCLA news article on the web at: http://www.uclanews.ucla.edu/Docs/KC046.html

HR FAQs

How Do I List a Job? What Do I Need to Include in a Job Vacancy Listing?

With your Library HR department shooting out new positions to the campus postings at the rate of four to five per week, we are receiving many inquiries about how to compile a job vacancy listing packet. Refreshers on the steps in this process are available on our website at: http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/LHRD/vacancy.html

Remember you need an the signature of an AUL, and in some cases the AUL's superior, for straight replacements, new jobs, increased percentages of time or extensions of appointments.
