Regents' Resolution SP-2, which took effect January 1, 1996, prohibits the use of race, sex, color, ethnicity and national origin in university employment and contracting practices except where necessary to be eligible for government funding. Following campus consultation, the Office of the President has issued interim policies and guidelines for implementation in the areas of academic and staff employment and business contracting.
Revised personnel policies affecting academic appointees, staff, A&PS, MAP and executive employees may be found on the Berkeley Campus Personnel Office Gopher in the Personnel Policies and Contracts folder. It is important to note that while some affirmative action policies and employment practices have been modified to comply with the Regents' resolution, the university must continue to comply with federal regulations and thus many policies and practices remain unchanged. Furthermore, the administrations remains committed to recruiting and maintaining a diverse workforce in support of campus goals. The January 17 issue of the Berkeleyan carried a front page article on the content and implications of these new and revised policies.

The Observer Program provides a valuable service to the campus by training and placing volunteers to act as impartial observers at protests and other events where there is a likelihood of confrontation between police and demonstrators or of misconduct or illegal behavior. Observers act only as neutral eyewitnesses at the events; they do not get involved in the events in any other way.
The Chancellor encourages supervisors when possible, to release staff in the A&PS and MAP classifications who wish to volunteer for this program, particularly new staff or staff who have not served before.
The names of new volunteers, as well as any inquiries regarding the program, should be directed to the campus Observer Coordinator in the Office of Student Activities and Services, Hal Reynolds, 102 Sproul Hall, Phone 2-6772, e-mail hgr@uclink. He will arrange for orientation and training.
