Changes in Physics-Astronomy Library
Laura D. Ng, Operations Manger, Physics - Astronomy Library, announced her retirement effective January 21, 2004 after almost 22 years with the University, most of which were with The Library. She requested no party; so, we tried to get the word around informally. I hope many of you had an opportunity to wish Laura well. Apologies if you did not hear in time to say farewell and good-luck.
I invite you to please welcome Kim Wu, who will be assuming the responsibilities of keeping the day-to-day services and operations of the Physics-Astronomy Library on keel. If you have not yet met Kim, I assure you that you will want to. Kim has been acting as the technical services workleader, our course reserves liaison, our PC expert, and Web guru. Kim has a degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from Berkeley and has been working as Library Assistant since December 1998. Kim has consistently provided "excellent" public service to the students, faculty, and visitors in physics and astronomy. In the past two years Kim has been taking courses in computer graphic design, working toward a certificate program through UC extension. Kim's products in this area, including the recently redesigned Physics-Astronomy Library's homepage, showcase her talents.

The current issue of "California Libraries," published by the California Library Association, has a very nice article about Lincoln Cushing, the Institute of Industrial Relations library, and how they serve the community. Mellon Grant Received
I am very pleased to announce that the Library, in partnership with the Division of Undergraduate Education (VPUE Christina Maslach) and the Undergraduate Division of the College of Letters & Sciences (Dean Holub), has received $749,000 from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to work with faculty to enhance undergraduate research and information skills.
This grant extends and builds upon our first Mellon funded project that served as a pilot, and I'd like to acknowledge several people in the Library who have worked with me and our campus partners to make the pilot project a success and to develop the fuller proposal:
- Pat Maughan who serves as overall Project Manager (so she has a lengthy list of contributions)
- Beth Dupuis who has helped me draft the proposal, who serves as lead on the development of the curriculum for the Faculty Institute and co-facilitated the Institute for the pilot and who created and managed the Mellon Library Partners
- Sarah McDaniel who worked with the Assessment Subgroup of the Steering Committee.
I would also like to thank those who served as Mellon Library Partners for the 13 Fellows in the Pilot Project.
Our campus Partners and members of the Steering Committee include:
- Victor Edmonds (Educational Technology Services)
- Barbara Davis (Undergraduate Education)
- Cynthia Shrager (Undergraduate Education)
- Steve Tollefson (Office of Educational Development)
- Linda Von Hoene (GSI Teaching and Resource Center)
I look forward to the continuing work with the library staff, faculty, and campus partners over the next four years of the grant.
