She will serve as Program Coordinator in the Teaching Library half-time and Reference Librarian in RSCD.

LIBRARY TOURS NOW START AT 3 PM!
As the Doe/Moffitt constructions nears completion, the library has undergone several changes. The new Doe stacks have opened, the Map Room has moved, and the newly expanded Government Information Service is now operational in what was formerly known as the Loan Hall. Until the dust finally settles, tours are an excellent way to keep patrons informed so they can continue to use the library effectively.
Beginning January 17, Spring & Summer Session tours will be offered weekly (on Tuesdays) through August 8. They will start 10 minutes earlier now at 3 PM and will last approximately 1 hour. Tours begin at the first floor entrance of Doe Library (across from the Security Desk).
In addition to the regular weekly Tuesday tour, special tours for UCB faculty, students and staff can be arranged by appointment. To arrange a special tour, please have patrons contact Mari Miller, Doe Library Tour Coordinator, 643-7202 (or email: mmiller@library). Special tours are subject to availability of staff and are carefully evaluated for referral to other library units, when appropriate. Requests from non-UC clientele are referred to other campus units, when appropriate.
Please help us get the word out to the campus to tour its new, modern,
spacious Library!

Ati-Atihan Festival (Philippines) - January 21-22
One of the most colorful celebrations in the Philippines, the Ati-Atihan Festival commemorates the peace pact between the Ati of Panay (pygmies) and the Malays, who were early migrants in the islands. The townspeople blacken their bodies with soot, wear colorful costumes and sing and dance in the streets. Also, the festival celebrates the Feast Day of Santo Nino (the infant Jesus). This annual festival takes place during the third weekend in January.

Ramadan
While most of us associate holidays with feasting, Muslims celebrate Ramadan, the major Islamic holiday, with a month of daytime fasting. Observed during the ninth month of the Islamic year, Ramadan begins in February this year. It starts when the moon first appears as a thin crescent and ends when a sliver of moon is sighted again, 29 or 30 days later. Ramadan commemorates the gift of the Koran from God. Fasting during Ramadan is an exercise in self-control that is intended to stir genuine empathy and compassion for the poor and to promote spiritual renewal. The truly festive aspect of Ramadan occurs when the new moon is sighted and the fast is broken. The days following the new moon, called Eid-ul-Fitr (the spelling varies) are filled with feasting and visiting relatives and friends.
One day Jason the-security-guard, also known as Jason Delaney, was standing outside the Librarian's Office.
"Hey Jason."
Jason said, "Hey."
He stood waiting.
"I'm waiting for Maria Shriver to come out of the bathroom," he said.
We looked at him.
"Maria Shriver. You know, she's married to Arnold Schwartzenegger."
"Maria Shriver is Not in that bathroom."
"Yes, she is! She's here with that crew filming something for Dateline."
We began to believe him so we crowded into the doorway and leaned out into the hall.
"You know, we Could go in there."
We stopped to contemplate what it would be like to be in a bathroom with Maria Shriver.
"You know, maybe we should think of a reason to be standing in this doorway so that when she comes out, we don't look so obvio -- oops, too late, there she is."
Wow.
"She looks shorter."
"Yeah."
"Pretty hair."
"See ya," said Jason smiling.
