Almost-New Staff Member in Baker Service

I am happy to announce that in early December Interlibrary Services was able to hire Joseph Gonzalez away from the NRLF as a 75% LA III in Baker Service and Interlibrary Lending/Photoduplication. This position was held previously by Teresa Moore, who is now our SLA Expediter. Joey performs most of the web delivery functions in Baker, as well as a myriad of other tasks. Joey did retrieval, web delivery and other scanning, at the NRLF so he is familiar with many of the functions of his new position. Joey also works part-time at Cody's and is a photographic artist. He is currently building his own darkroom where he will spend his nights putting together a portfolio, with the ultimate goal of attending art school for an MFA.

Fine-tuning at the Public Health Library

I would like to thank Juta Savage for stepping up to the plate in March 2001 to become Acting Assistant Head when I became Acting Head of the Public Health Library. Juta's dedication has been tremendous. During this period, she increased her hours to work full time. Juta has been working at the Public Health Library since 1984 so she provides objectivity and a valuable historical perspective. She assisted with a myriad number of administrative tasks, provided invaluable advice, and served as a sounding board for the many challenges I faced. Juta says that working full time and assisting me has been invigorating and interesting, but she is ready to stop down and once we return to full staffing wants to resume her preferred part-time work schedule.

I am happy that we have a competent and enthusiastic replacement in Nick Robinson. Nick started in the Public Health Library first as a temporary librarian in 1998 and obtained a permanent position in 1999. Prior to that, he was a librarian for the University Health Services where he managed the Counseling and Psychological Services' Career & Educational Guidance Library. As of January 2003, Nick will assume the role of Assistant Head in addition to his recent new responsibilities of outreach and instruction. Previously, he had managed our Document Delivery operation for our contract clientele. I know Nick is prepared for this new role and is eagerly looking forward to this new challenge.

Congratulations to Nick and thank you, Juta!

Lia Hillman Moves On

On January 2, 2003, archivist Lia Hillman left The Bancroft Library to join San Francisco Public Library as a Children's Librarian. Lia is now working at the Mission District branch, putting her Spanish language skills and her creative imagination and artistic skills to work. Here in Bancroft Technical Services, we will miss her excellent archival skills, dedicated work ethic, and good sense of humor, but wish her all the best in her new endeavors.

Hidden History Site Debuts

The Gay Bears! Collection in The University Archives announces the debut of a web site dedicated to exploring the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history of Cal. The web site is available on the Library's Sunsite at: http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/gaybears

The Hidden History of the Berkeley Campus was designed by Erik Klavon. The content was written and/or compiled by William Benemann and Steve Finacom. The graphics were created by Mary Scott. The web site allows researchers to explore by date, campus location, or personal name or event. Each entry provides a brief summary of the topic, followed by a bibliography for further reading. Comments and suggestions are very welcome.
