Brian Quigley Named Interim Head of Math/Statistics Library

While the Library undergoes a national recruitment for a new Head of the Mathematics/Statistics Library to replace retired librarian Ann Jensen, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Brian Quigley as Interim Head. (We hope to recruit and hire a new permanent Head by July 2006).

Brian Quigley, a librarian in the Engineering Library since 2000, serves as the Electronic Outreach Librarian. His responsibilities there include reference, instruction and web management; he also serves as the selector for computer science, industrial engineering, operations research, and nuclear engineering. He will continue this position on a half-time basis while he serves as the Interim Head in Math/Stat also on a half-time appointment.

Before joining the UC Berkeley Libraries, Brian worked as the mathematics and physics librarian at Texas A&M University. His most recent publication is a review of Using the Mathematics Literature (Marcel Dekker 2004) in Issues in Science & Technology Librarianship 42 (Spring 2005). Brian has an M.L.S. and a B.S. in Mathematics, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Brian's appointment as Interim Head will be on a half-time basis while he continues with his Engineering Library work mentioned above. He will manage the Math/Stat Library staff and resources, and will serve as selector for the Mathematics and Statistics collections.

We are delighted to have Brian's assistance during the next six months, and he will begin his new half-time position in the Math/Stat Library on January 17th.

Appointment of New Library Security Supervisor

January 9 marked the first day of work for our new Security Supervisor, Gerald Bland. Gerald will be responsible for all security activities in the Doe-Moffitt complex. He will be reporting to Miguel Labon and Miguel has already begun taking him around the buildings, introducing him to staff and acquainting him with the facilities.

Gerald comes to us with significant and relevant experience, as well as outstanding references, including 13 years with the San Francisco Sheriff's Department where he worked as a Senior Deputy and Watch Commander. Prior to that he worked for a similar length of time in the field of special education. I believe Gerald will be a good fit for our needs -- experience in law enforcement but sensitive to the unique issues of an academic institution.

Gerald's appointment marks the end of a lengthy recruitment process. The interview committee that considered several candidates did a thorough job before making its recommendations. Armanda Barone, Jon Thomas and Miguel Labon were on the committee.

On a related matter, once Gerald is settled in during the coming weeks, we will proceed to implementation of the recommendations made by the Security Review Task Force. We are already doing background work in a couple of the targeted areas and will bring proposals forward in the near future.

I want to thank everyone for their patience while we worked to fill the position with the best candidate possible. I hope you'll all give Gerald a bit of your time to help him in his initial orientation.

Library Bookstore to Reopen January 23

The Library Bookstore will reopen in 132 Doe Library on Monday, January 23, 2006. The new location affords the Library a productive means of disposal of the large number of items withdrawn from our collections, as well as a way to maximize benefit from gift books not added to campus holdings. On opening, the store will feature particularly strong collections in the fields of history of science, mathematics, medieval studies, and Russian history, with some attractive books in virtually every area collected by the Library. The store will be open between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m Monday through Thursday. In addition to regular sales of individually priced books in 132 Doe, occasional $1.00 sales will conducted in 303 Doe.

In building the new bookstore it has been my pleasure to work with Jeff Johnson and Susan Francisco. Jeff's response to problems with design or equipment was regularly something on the order of "there must be some way to solve this," and he invariably did. Susan let us know exactly what we in G/E had to do in order for her and her crew to build the new store; ultimately, our role was to clear the space and then to keep clear ourselves as Susan, Don Robinson, and Al Galang took down old panels and installed new in the space of about an hour. My thanks to Jeff and Susan, and to Don and Al.

Stop by 132 Doe on the 23d for the Modest Opening. No brass band, no free coffee, but maybe a few interesting books.

Joseph C. Rowell Desk in Morrison

The oak roll top desk once used by UC's first University Librarian, Joseph C.Rowell (1875-1919), is now the circulation desk for Morrison Library. It is a outstanding example of library furniture produced by the Library Bureau Company in the 1890's. The desk has been restored to its original condition and fits in with the Morrison architectural ambiance. I'd like to thank The Bancroft Library for transferring the desk to Morrison, especially Steven Black.
