Mark Twain Project's Edition of "Roughing It" Wins Award

The Modern Language Socity has awarded the Mark Twain Project's edition of "Roughing It" (UC Press, 1993) *the* *inaugural* *prize* for the Most Distinguished Scholarly Edition of 1993-94.  The award was presented on 28 December 1995 at the MLA Convention in Chicago to editors Harriet Elinor Smith and Edgar Marquess Branch, and consisted of a certificate and a check for each of $500.  Smith and the two associate editors, Lin Salamo and Robert Pack Browning, are on the staff of the Project, and Branch is professor emeritus at Miami University.

The paperback Mark Twain Library edition of this book, based on the scholarly edition, will be published in early February 1996 and will cost only $16.95.  It includes all of the original illustrations and the historical notes of the scholarly edition (but not the technical apparatus), and is aimed at students and general readers of Mark Twain.  A great deal!  Books may be ordered by calling the UC Press order number: 800-777-4726 (the ISBN number for ordering the paperback is 20559-6).

OCLC Format Integration Program

On Monday, February 5, 1996 OCLC Pacific will be presenting a workshop focusing on the second phase of format integration in the Berkeley Conference Center on Shattuck Avenue, from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM, for the northern California library community.

The speakers will discuss the changes in the fixed field displays in OCLC (e.g., mnemonics, arrangement of codes and new codes), new search qualifiers, the new 006 fields, etc., using overhead transparencies and an extensive handout of examples.

The Cataloging Council suggests that one or two catalogers or cataloging assistants from each cataloging unit attend this free workshop and take the information and examples back to their units.  The Cataloging Council will distribute examples of GLADIS fixed fields also, but since there are no significant differences in the implementation of format integration in GLADIS, there will be no additional workshop for the Berkeley campus.

Contact Margaret McCormick in Technical Services (mmccormi@library.berkeley.edu, 642-8327) to sign up for the workshop by January 19th if possible.  Reservations are first come/first served and are limited to 120 participants.
