Former Head of Circulation Ken Legg Dies of Cancer
Ken Legg, former Head of Circulation at Main Library, died of cancer after a long struggle on December 24, 1996. Ken served as Head of Circulation beginning in September 1973; he was in charge when the Library was hit by the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, and was responsible for the Main stack cleanup afterwards.
A Santa Cruz High School graduate, Ken received his BA in European history from UCB in 1960, after having worked in the Library in a variety of student assignments. The following year he joined the staff of the Library as search supervisor for the Circulation Department. He was appointed Head of Circulation in September 1973, and retired under the first VERIP in 1991.
Ken's family and friends suggest a donation to the SPCA in lieu of flowers.

David Farrell Begins Rotation in Bancroft
I am delighted to announce that David Farrell, AUL for Collections, has begun a 1-year 0.25 FTE rotation to The Bancroft Library. His responsibilities include assignments in public services and special collections and archives management. In addition, he will work with the curators on special projects developing and implementing Bancroft's new strategic plan. His first assignment in this area will be coordinating a project to analyze Bancroft's acquisitions and acquisitions expenditures over the past five years. We hope to use the results in planning and priority setting for collections, processing, fund raising, and coordinating Bancroft's collection development program with other campus libraries.
David was appointed AUL for Collections in 1989 when he arrived at Berkeley. His professional activities include national and local leadership in ALA (past president of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services) and UC (chair of the Collection Development Committee) and he has been an active advocate for the electronic library locally and within the UC consortium. David has published in the areas of cooperative collection development, fine press and printing history, and the oral history of Robert Penn Warren and other Kentucky writers. I expect these interests and skills will be especially useful to Bancroft as we plan for the future.

Librarian in Print: Willa Baum
Willa K. Baum, division head of ROHO, is co-editor with David K. Dunaway, University of New Mexico, of "Oral History: an Interdisciplinary Anthology," which was recently republished by Alto Mira Press. The first edition was published in 1984, by the American Association for State and Local History.
Based on journal articles Baum and Dunaway had originally selected to teach their classes in oral history, the Anthology became the standard text for college level courses in oral history. In the following decade uses and emphases in oral history expanded. The 1996 edition includes a number of new readings, especially covering the growth of oral history in Europe and Latin America.

New Physical Science Libraries
Effective December 1996 the Astronomy-Math-Statistics, Chemistry, and Physics libraries combined administratively to form the new Physical Science Libraries (PSL). PSL is a three-year experiment to test a new organizational model whose primary goals are to: 1) ensure smooth continuity in the provision of library services; and 2) promote the creation of new, innovative services in an environment of ever-shrinking resources, constant change, and increasing user demands.
Jeanne Fong, Acting Chemistry Librarian, has agreed to serve as Acting Head of PSL. Under Jeanne's coordination, the three units, each of which is keeping it’s name, are operating as a single library. Whereas day-to-day operations within each unit are managed by the unit's operations manager, the operations managers also have the added authority to reassign staff across unit lines to ensure continuity in the performance of essential library functions in times of critical staffing crises and to accomplish special projects. To facilitate this kind of inter-unit staffing flexibility the operations managers - Ayana Bourgeois (Chemistry), Laura Ng (Physics), and Bella Shirman (Astronomy-Math-Statistics) - have been working together to identify basic routine library tasks that are amenable to cross-training. In the spring, they and other PSL staff will review how these tasks are performed in each of the three units, and try to establish a set of common policies, procedures, and performance standards that emphasize smooth, efficient workflows, and use of technology to increase staff productivity.
In the new PSL service model, Diane Fortner, half-time Physics Librarian and half-time Acting Astronomy-Math-Statistics Librarian, will be freed of unit operations management and supervisory responsibilities so that she may devote her time and energies to professional activities and creative endeavors in service to the Library's primary clientele. Although plans for permanently filling the Astronomy-Math-Statistics and Chemistry professional vacancies are yet to be determined, it is the expectation that, in future, those subject specialists too will follow the PSL librarian model.
I wish to extend my thanks to the PSL staff for their willingness to explore new ways of managing their scarce resources in order to ensure that our faculty, students, and staff can continue to receive the best service possible.

The Regional Oral History Office announces the availability in The Bancroft Library of the oral history of Walter A. Haas, Jr., (1916-1995) "Levi Strauss & Co. Executive, Bay Area Philanthropist, and Owner of the Oakland Athletics." The late Wally Haas's oral history carries forward the story of Levi Strauss and Company, a story begun with the oral histories of his uncle, Daniel Koshland, Sr., (1971); and his father, Walter A. Haas, Sr., (1975); and continued with a volume of interviews with four of the executives, "Levi Strauss & Co.: Tailors to the World," 1976. Wally Haas, Jr. brought the account of the garment business up-to-date and added the ups and downs of owning a baseball team. Giving back to the community is a Haas and Koshland family tradition and the oral history covers Wally Haas's service with the Hunter's Point Boys' Club, Ford Foundation, National Alliance of Businesses, the Trilateral Commission, and, of course, UC Berkeley.
